Style essentials

This guide is an introduction to citing using the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Style. For further information, refer to ASCE Publications - Information for Authors & Editors or download the pdf.

It is important to BE CONSISTENT when you are referencing.

The ASCE Style is an author-date style with two key components:

  1. In-text citations, which appear within the text
(last name of the author and publication year).
  2. A reference list, at the end of the text
(provides full details of all references cited in-text).

Footnotes are only used to provide more explanation of a statement or concept given in the text - they should be used sparingly, if at all. If used, they should be numbered sequentially. Any references cited within a footnote are treated just the same as those cited in the main text.
