Text formatting

IEEE style uses a single sequentially ordered number in a square bracket to cite references to each source mentioned in the text. Each citation number in the reference list is also enclosed in square brackets.

Three common conventions are for books, chapters and periodicals:

Book - recommended format

Citation number
Enclosed in square brackets, offset from the rest of the citation.

[1] H. Inose, P. Fingle, and J.R. Pierce, Information Technology and Civilization, 2nd ed., New York: Freeman, 1984, pp. 105-121.

Author(s)
The initial(s) and surname of each author is given. Commas go between each name; "and" comes before the last name in the list:

[1] H. Inose, P. Fingle, and J.R. Pierce, Information Technology and Civilization, 2nd ed., New York: Freeman, 1984, pp. 105-121.

Book title
Rendered in italics:

[1] H. Inose, P. Fingle, and J.R. Pierce, Information Technology and Civilization, 2nd ed., New York: Freeman, 1984, pp. 105-121.

Edition - if not the first
Followed by ed. and a comma:

[1] H. Inose, P. Fingle, and J.R. Pierce, Information Technology and Civilization, 2nd ed., New York: Freeman, 1984, pp. 105-121.

Place of publication
If the city of publication is not well-known... to avoid confusion, add the country, or the standard abbreviation for the state. Followed by a colon:
(Do not use the postal abbreviation - e.g. Texas is Tex., not TX.)

Publisher and year of publication
Followed by commas:

Preceded by vol. and no. respectively, separated and followed by commas.
