Acknowledging Sources

"To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use another person's work. This means that whenever you use information obtained from another source including ideas, examples, theories or opinions, you must give a full reference to that source."

Language and Learning Skills Unit's Referencing Guide Acknowledging Sources

Bibliographies

The bibliographic information given in the footnote references, is also provided in a separate list - the bibliography or reference list - which gives the reader a clearer idea of your research.

On a separate page, following your essay, all of the works you have cited appear in alphabetical order by author surname.
The bibliographic information in a Bibliography and footnote are not the same: in a bibliography...

  • the author's surname comes before the initial(s)
  • elements may be separated with full stops, rather than commas

Ordering the Bibliography

  • The bibliography is organized alphabetically.
  • The bibliography includes every item in the footnotes.
Archival sources, interviews etc., should be included within the alphabetical listing of the bibliography.
