Law
University of Melbourne Archives holds an extensive and wide range of law-related records, one of the largest of our collecting areas, totalling over 1200 metres. Collections include many from Victorian legal firms, individual lawyers and judges, professional bodies and records from the University's own Faculty of Law and from Faculty academics.
The records of legal firms begin from the earliest days of the colony and range geographically from suburban Melbourne to Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool and Beechworth. These collections perdominantly contain client files: contracts, mortgages, leasing documents, wills and probates, marriage settlements, inventories and memoranda and articles of association of companies. Some files run over several generations of families and provide an interesting commentary on social and business history.
