Art Bound A Selection of Artists' Books

The Artists

Julia Nixon

Both books have pages of ‘Mi Tientes Pastel Paper’ and are stamped with images (shells in the shell books and leaves and flowers from the actual tree in the pod books). I make an impression on foam and use this as a stamp to print the pages. The books are bound (with perle embroidery cotton) using a variation on Coptic binding as taught to me by Adele Outeridge. I pick the Poinciana pods when they have just turned brown and keep them for about six months until they are ready to open. I found if I left them on the tree until they opened they started to deteriorate. Most Poinciana trees have very large pods up to about 50cm in length but my tree at home for some reason has only small pods that are ideal for the books. Although only a small quantity of seed pods each year are flat enough. In Mackay when the trees are all in flower they are quite a spectacular sight and I wanted to capture some of that in the books as a memento for visitors to our area.

It’s not only about what is inside. The focus is on the structure and beauty of the binding. The book as a piece of art.
