The Artists
Stephen Spurrier
The works by Stephen Spurrier in this
exhibition represent his involvement with
the Artists’ book for over 14 years. Firstly
the miniature ‘throw-aways’, (such as the
Fourteenth Book of Heads) as he calls
them, which are an ongoing part of his
work and philosophy about the book as
a democratic medium.
Secondly at the other end of the scale are
his relatively complex small edition boxed
sets of books such as The Book of Stretch.
Items in this series are often produced as
a result of his frequent travels both within
Australia and overseas.
The third aspect of his work is
collaboration. Stephen now collaborates
with over 20 artists around the country,
mostly by mail. He enjoys the process
of having to move out of his comfort
zone by deliberately working with fellow
artists from a broad range of backgrounds
and approaches. The cross section of
collaborations exhibited here gives an
insight into the surprises and challenges
faced by both parties as each work
progresses.
