The Artists

To make a book is to assume for company the great printers, from Gutenberg to Giovanni Mardersteig. To publish a poem is to accompany Sappho and Herakleitos, Pound and Wittgenstein. To make a poem and a book is therefore, for me, the highest and deepest daily challenge that I know.

Art critics have called my style of painting and etching 'naïve' and this tends to confuse people who believe that the term refers to primitive and untutored art. If naïve means that I paint and see with the clear eyes of a child, I am happy to accept the description, for although I have studied under prominent artist-tutors, my style is self taught. Every picture tells a story, and is a combination of my love of colour, pattern and storytelling, with a touch of humour.
