“ Taiwan Today: Culture, Locality and ‘Other Chinas'” Date: Friday, 14 December, 2007 Location: Multifunction Room, 1888 Building RSVP to Emily Dunn e.dunn1@pgrad.unimelb.edu.au by 10 December 2007 for catering purpose. Description: The purpose of this seminar is to bring together researchers studying the culture of Taiwan and/or "other Chinas" (which might include the culture of Hong Kong , the Chinese diaspora, or even ethnic minority cultures in the People's Republic of China .) It addresses the relationship between culture and locality, a problem which has been central to intellectual, political cultural debates in contemporary Taiwan and in other societies that have a Chinese cultural backround. How is locality culturally created and identified? What roles do experiences of migration and settlement play in the cultural imagination of particular localities?
