The JSAA notes the passing of the following colleagues with deep regret:
Harold Bolitho
Professor Harold (Hal) Bolitho passed away on 23 October 2010. Professor Bolitho had degrees from the University of Melbourne and Yale. He taught at Melbourne and Monash Universities before taking up a position in the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department at Harvard in 1985. His research focused on the Tokugawa, Bakumatsu and Meiji periods, and at Harvard he taught, among other things, a legendary Core course, "Constructing the Samurai". He served as director of the Reischauer Institute from 1988 to 1991. Professor Bolitho was the first President of the Japanese Studies Association of Australia from 1978 to 1980, and is fondly remembered by his former students and colleagues in Australia and the USA.
