General Books

Items with the prefixes: Baill, Baill f, Baill gf or Baill ef are located on the Second Floor.

Folios:

Oversized books carry the prefixes: Baill f, gf or ef. They are shelved separately from the rest of the main collection to accommodate their size.

Microforms

The Baillieu holds a large and nationally significant Microform Collection containing a wealth of primary and secondary source material. It is located on the Lower Ground Floor.

Microform is photographically reduced material which cannot be read with the naked eye & therefore special readers are needed to view this material.

It comes in 3 types:

  • Microfilm  is on a reel. (Baill MIC/o is the location given in the library catalogue)
  • Microfiche is a flat sheet of film (Baill MIC/f is the location given in the library catalogue)

Guides to the microform collections are also located in the lower ground floor.

Journals

Journals are generally not for loan, though bound journals may be borrowed by University of Melbourne higher degree students and staff for limited periods

The Journals collections prefix is Baill P and located on the Lower Ground Floor. In Baillieu, the journals are divided between:

  • bound journals (older issues bound together)
  • unbound journals (recent issues shelved as single copies)

Government Documents

The Library has a comprehensive collection of Australian and Victorian government publications, as well as selected holdings for other states and territories. Most of this material is located in the Government Documents Collection on the Third Floor in the Baillieu.

The Library also has substantial holdings of British parliamentary debates and papers, and United States Congressional publications.
