Collections and Services

 

Many of the library's resources and collections are now available online and can be found through the Library Catalogue and Subject Resources.


Books

Books are arranged by subject according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. To locate a particular book, it is necessary to find the call number by consulting the Library Catalogue. Books have been given the location UniM Chem
on the library catalogue. The normal loan period is 28 days. Books in high demand may be restricted to 7 day loan only and cannot be borrowed by Caval or Approved Borrowers.

 

Journals

Print journals are arranged in an alphabetical sequence by title or, in some instances, by name of issuing body, e.g. Journal of the American Chemical Society is found under American not under Journal. The location of the library catalogue for print journals in the Chemistry Library is UniM Chem P. Search the Library Catalogue by title to access full text electronic journals and databases available to the University of Melbourne staff and students. Journals are not available for loan.

Reserve

This is a collection of books and other materials selected by the teaching staff. They have a location of UniM Chem Reserve on the library catalogue. Use the Reserve Lists on the Library Catalogue to locate material onr reserve for a particular subject. Items are available from the loans desk for 2 hour loan during the opening hours and for overnight loan after 4pm. Overnight loans must be returned by 1Oam following working day. Fines are imposed for all late returns of reserve materials. Reserve material is only available to University of Melbourne staff and students and can not be borrowed by CAVAL or Approved Borrowers.

Reference - Not for Loan

This collection consists of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks, tables etc. and is listed on the Library catalogue as UniM Chem REF. Reference books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, and are shelved in a separate section of the library. Reference books are not available for loan.

 

Safety Collection - Not for Loan

Iterns concerned with safety in the Chemical Laboratory are shelved separately from the main collection, to enable staff and students to retrieve them quickly in the event of an emergency. The Safety Collection is located near the Photocopy Room.

Information and Research Skills

Orientation tours of the library and research skills sessions for individuals or small groups can be arranged on request.
