Collections and Services

Many of the library's resources and collections are now available online and can be found through the Library Catalogue and SuperSearch.

The journals collection includes both print and online journals. Print journals are arranged alphabetically by title and are given the location UniM EarthSci P on the library catalogue. New issues of print journals received by the library are put on display every Friday for a week. The easiest way to check whether the Library holds a particular journal title is to search for the title in the catalogue.

Books in the Earth Sciences Library are arranged on the shelves according to their Dewey Decimal Classification number. UniM EarthSci is the location given in the library catalogue for these. Some books have supplementary software which is held separately at the Loans Counter and is available on request. New books are placed on display near the Reference Collection. A list of new materials and a new materials list archive is available.

Large sized books are shelved in a separate folio sequence (listed as UniM EarthSci f on the library catalogue) after the main shelving sequence. When looking a book up on the catalogue, check the location carefully to see whether or not it includes an F. If it does then the book will be located in the folio sequence.

Extremely large books, known as elephant folios and given a location of UniM EarthSci ef on the library catalogue are located in the wooden cabinet, near the Reference collection.
