Rare Books Collection

The Earth Sciences Rare Book Collection is held at the Earth Sciences Library. It is an important research collection of rare and early geological and palaeontological texts. The collection includes many seminal works from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It includes over 1,000 volumes and approximately two thirds of the items in the collection are the only known copy available in Australia.

Apart from a small number of items, the collection is not catalogued on the University of Melbourne Library Catalogue. This list is organised alphabetically by author and title. Volumes are not available for loan but can be used in the library.

Books may be viewed in the Special Collections Reading Room in the Baillieu Library, by arrangement in advance with staff in the Earth Sciences Library. Please note that it takes 72 hours to process requests. Contact the Earth Sciences Library to request items.
