Many electronic journal providers offer alerting services to help you keep up to date with what is being published in recent issues of journals. These services can alert you when new articles are published and help you keep informed about the latest research and literature in your field. The advantage of these services is that researchers are often given advanced notice of the publication of new content before is available in print or online. Types of alerts include:

  • Table of Contents Alerts (TOC) - The tables of contents of selected journals are sent to you by email.
  • Saved Search Alerts (SSA) - A Saved Search Alert is based on a search in a database or group of databases. The search is run at specified intervals and you are alerted if any new articles on your topic are available.
  • Citation Alerts (CA) - A Citation Alert notifies you by email when an article of interest is referenced or cited by another article.
  • RSS Feeds (RSS) - RSS (Really Simple Syndication is an XML-based format that scans a site for updates to the content, and then delivers those to subscribers in the form of a list of headlines, each containing a description and link to the related web page. You can access RSS Feeds by either downloading a stand alone feed reader onto your PC or by registering at one of the online readers so you can access your favourite feeds from any computer. More information about RSS Feeds can be found here: http://www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/feed/#whatis

Below is a select list of some of the e-journal providers that the University of Melbourne Library currently subscribes to. A more comprehensive list is available through SuperSearch.

Please note: Most of the providers listed require individual registration to receive email alerts or access RSS feeds, however this is usually free and it only takes a few minutes to register. Access to the full content of many of these online resources is limited to University of Melbourne students and staff only.

If you would like more information about current awareness services, or assistance with setting up your own RSS feeds or search alerts, please contact the Giblin Economics and Commerce Library on 8344 4755.
