General Australian Statistics

Australian Bureau of Statistics material:

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is Australia’s official statistical organization. Its main function is to provide government and the community with a national statistical service. Areas covered include: demography, social statistics including welfare, health and education; national accounts, foreign trade and finance; labour, prices and incomes; agriculture; industry including mining, manufacturing, building and construction, services industries and transport. National, as well as state figures are produced. The ABS web-based information service AusStats, available via the Electronic Resources Search box on the library homepage, contains all ABS publications from 1998 - , as well as the time series spreadsheets, the ABS Catalogue of Publications and Products and the current updated Australian Yearbook. The ABS website contains summary statistics, release dates for data, media releases and more. A comprehensive collection of ABS publications until 1999 (including Australian Census materials in various formats, such as paper, microfiche and CD-ROM) is held in the Baillieu Library. Many current printed publications are held in the Baillieu Reference Collection, arranged firstly by jurisdiction - Aust, NSW, Vic, etc. - then by ABS catalogue number. From 2000 this collection includes annuals, etc., but not monthly or quarterly publications. Earlier ABS material is held in the Baillieu Library microfiche collection at MIC/f 4377d to 1993; and on CD-ROM commencing with 1994. The Giblin Library also has an extensive collection of ABS publications until 1999, located on the 2nd floor and shelved by its ABS catalogue number. TIMESERIES: ABS Timeseries is part of the AusStats web-based information service. Over 2,000 spreadsheets are available. Most time series cover the last 15 years, some cover the last 40 years. Coverage includes: Agriculture, Balance of Payments, Building & Construction Consumer Price Indexes, Demography, Finance, International Trade, Labour Markets, Manufacturing, Motor Vehicle Registrations, National Accounts, Retail, Tourism and Macromodellers’ databases. CENSUS: The AusStats web-based information service provides access to Australian Census of Population and Housing Publications (including the Social Atlases) and Basic Community Profiles, commencing with the 1996 Census. CDATA is a data retrieval and mapping package which can produce customised tables, graphs and maps from the Australian Census of Population and Housing (1981- ). The CDATA service is available in the Map Section, ERC. CLIB is a cd-rom product containing data from the Australian Census of Population and Housing (1991- ). The data can be viewed and printed but not downloaded to disk files. It is available in the Baillieu and the Map Section, ERC. Tourism Research Australia
The TRA is an intergovernmental agency, funded jointly by the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments. TRA’s core activities centre around the conduct 
of two major travel surveys and its analytical work. The International Visitor Survey (IVS) is a survey of 40,000 international visitors per annum, conducted 
at Australia’s major international airports. It provides detailed information about the characteristics and travel behaviour of international visitors to Australia 
on a quarterly, rolling annual and calendar year basis. The National Visitor Survey (NVS) is a survey of 120,000 Australian residents each year which provides 
detailed information about the characteristics and travel behaviour of Australian residents. Details of travel overseas as sell as travel within Australia, both 
day trips and trips involving overnight stays away from home, are provided in the survey results on a quarterly, rolling annual and calendar year basis.
