Collections and Services

Many of the library's resources and collections are now available online and can be found through the Library Catalogue and SuperSearch.

Books

This collection located on Level 5 of the library consists of books dealing with education, educational research and related issues. The larger sized books are shelved separately in a folio sequence (UniM ERC f). There are also separate collections of school level textbooks (ERC TB or TBf), junior fiction (ERC J) and picture books (ERC Z) housed on the same level.

Reference

This collection has been relocated temporarily to the ground floor of the Baillieu Library. It will be returning to the ERC Level 3 once the refurbishment is complete. It contains dictionaries, encyclopaedias, directories, handbooks, as well as, specialist tools. Reference materials are not available for loan.

Journals

This has been relocated to Level 2 of the ERC, which will be its permanent home. This is an extensive collection of education related periodicals (ERC P). Bound and unbound issues are shelved together, alphabetically by title. Only University of Melbourne staff and higher degree students can borrow from this collection.

Reserve

This is temporarily located behind the Loans Desk located on Level 1.

It includes books, reading packs and media materials (such as videos, dvds and cdroms) in high demand. They are limited to either 2 hour (for books), 3 hour (for videos and dvds) and overnight loan. Fines apply for the late return of material.

Lecturers click here to place material on reserve. Items on Reserve are listed in the catalogue under course code and lecturer's name. Check what's on reserve for your subject.

Theses

The ERC's thesis collection is a closed access collection of Faculty of Education Masters (major and minor), DEd and some PhD theses, as well as, former Melbourne CAE Arts theses. Theses are not for loan. Requests to consult ERC theses can be made at the ERC Information desk. ERC staff will retrieve theses Monday - Friday at 11.00 am and 2.45 pm.

Microforms

The ERC holds almost a full set of ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) documents on microfiche from 1966-2004. There are also education related journals and newspapers on microfiche (ERC MIC/f) or microfilm (ERC MIC/o). This collection is located on Level 2. The ERC has facilities for both reading and photocopying microfilm and microfiche. Please note, the cost of photocopying microforms is currently 25 cents per A4 page of standard paper. The reader/printer is located next to the microforms collection on Level 2.

Research Collections (B and AB)

The Research collections are multidisciplinary in scope and were formerly housed in the Baillieu Library. Australian material has an AB or ABf prefix. Other material has a B or Bf prefix. The renovation of the ERC has required the AB, and, some of the B collections to move to other locations such as Library Store or the Old Quad. The catalogue will indicate which location the item is held at. Those that remain in the ERC are located on Level 1 and Level 2.

The Research Collections contain archival materials, statistical information, foreign language materials, reports, primary and secondary research materials, and the calendars.
