Information Literacy

The Librarian gives various Orientation tours and Information Literacy sessions, including individual help with using the catalogues and databases.

Undergraduates are offered library classes at the beginning of each year, to increase their skills in information and resource gathering.

Postgraduates and staff are also provided with individual tuition to:

- introduce library services and resources
- gain information searching skills
- introduce database and internet searching

Photocopying

The Library is supported by Unicard Photocopy services.

Cards may be purchased from the card dispenser in the Library. The cost of purchasing a card is $2.00. They are rechargeable, and accept coins and notes from 20c to $50..

The card is common to other Melbourne University Library Branches.

All photocopying must be done in accordance with the Copyright Act, and relevant sections of the Act are displayed near the photocopier.

- Material from the general book collection
- Videos
- Material from other University of Melbourne Branches

Reference books, Reserve books, Periodicals, Exam Papers and items from the Vertical File are NOT FOR LOAN.

How to Borrow

- Take your items to the loans desk for checkout
- Present your University of Melbourne ID card
- Material on loan may be reserved for you
- Items from other University of Melbourne Branches must be requested via the Regional Services Cuckoo Service


Loan Periods

- The general loan period is 28 days
- Videos may be borrowed for 14 days
- High use items and recommended reading are usually 7 day loans

Returns

- Material can be returned in person to the Gilbert Chandler Library, or by post - where the borrower is responsible for the cost of packing and sending the items
- Returns can be made at any Regional Services Library

Renewals

- Borrowers may request a renewal by phone, fax, email or in person
- You must make a renewal request before the due date
- Renewals are not permitted if you have any overdue items, outstanding fines or if the item is on hold for another borrower
- Renewals are limited on high use items

Fines and Penalties

- Fines apply to late returns
- Once an item is overdue or fines total $15.00 borrowing privileges are suspended
- Fines accrued are payable by cash, cheque or money order at the library

Document Delivery

This service is available to University of Melbourne staff and postgraduate students, for books and articles not owned by the University of Melbourne.

There is a handling fee for all interlibrary loan requests. This is payable by departmental account number or by cash before the transaction is made.

Items may be obtained from overseas, but this may entail additional charges.

There are separate request forms for books and for photocopied articles.

CAVAL

A CAVAL card enables you to borrow directly from other participating college and university libraries in Victoria. There is no fee.

Please contact library staff for an application form or more information.

CAVAL borrowers from other institutions need to bring their home institution ID and a current CAVAL card issued by their home library. Once registered borrowing is permitted throughout the University of Melbourne Library network.
