  • "Australian Connections " 4/06/06
In the first of a new series of seven programs ranging from 1788 to the present day, Tim Dehn begins
his own personal exploration of some of the music performed in Australia and much of which was also
created here, together with the stories of those who heard it. Today's program begins with a five-octave
piano that arrived with the First Fleet, continues with country dance music and the elegance of the flute
and ends with Rossini, played at one of Sydney's first concerts in 1826; and we meet John Grant - one of
    Australia's first human rights activists.

  • "Australian Connections " 11/06/06
The middle of the nineteenth century is the setting for the second in this new series of seven programs in
which Tim Dehn explores music heard and largely composed in Australia and links it to people and events here
at the time. Today, a myopic Charles Sturt enduring the heat of the Simpson Desert, the pitfalls of the
Victorian gold rush, a visit to Sydney by the ex-wife of Home, Sweet Home composer, Henry Bishop, and three
weekends of Aussie Rules without a single goal scored; not to mention the first defeat of an English cricket
    team by Australia.

  • "Australian Connections " 18/06/06
From the excitement of the 1888 Centennial Exhibition in Melbourne to a death in the trenches of the Somme
in 1916, today's program considers boom, bust and Federation. It links these events to music by two composers
of the time: English-born George Marshall-Hall who settled in Australia and became a friend of the Heidelberg>br /> School of artists and Australian-born Frederick Septimus Kelly, who settled in England, became a friend of the
social elite and served at Gallipoli. The program features the first recording of Kelly's unfinished piano sonata

  • "Aboriginal Mental Health Part 1 - Tiwi Islands ", ALL IN THE MIND
Mental health in many Aboriginal communities takes a back seat because often the most basic human needs
are not adequately provided for. However, depression, psychosis and suicide are widespread, against a
backdrop of chronic alcohol and substance abuse. But there are some amazingly committed individuals
working hard to improve the situation with an innovative approach. Lynne Malcolm visits Tiwi and meets

The most visible musical fashions are those we dance to, and dance steps come and go as fashion dictates.
Queen Elizabeth I created a scandal when she danced the volta; the waltz - though it now seems unlikely
    - was also once considered outrageous. Andrew Ford asks are the biggest fashions in dance also always the"dirtiest"?

  • "Heaven on Earth ", Music and Fashion, 8/01/06 (Part 2 of 6)
Throughout history the church has inspired and probably paid for more music than any other establishment.
But what sort of music is appropriate for God? Even if we believe God to be unchanging, religious music
has been as subject to fashion as any other sort of music. Andrew Ford considers these changes, from
    mediaeval times to the present.

  • "Showtime ", Music and Fashion, 15/01/06 (Part 3 of 6)
The idea that music might be Art is pretty recent. Composers have always needed to earn money and if you
weren't employed by the Church or in some royal household, you had to market yourself. Handel's operas were
18th-century London's equivalent of Cats and Phantom of the Opera. But how did Handel become a Great
Classical Composer? The status of music alters when it moves from being popular to "worthwhile". Andrew Ford
asks how this affects the way we listen.

  • "Fame ", Music and Fashion, 22/01/06 (Part 4 of 6)
Bach was the most famous organist of his day, Liszt was the most famous pianist of his, and Mahler's
fame rested on his prodigious gifts as a conductor. Now we think of all three of them as composers.
Great ones, too. But we're lucky to know their music at all. The reputations of composers in their
lifetimes are subject to the whims of public taste, and that isn't always focused on music. In pop,
from Jimi Hendrix to Eva Cassidy, death can enhance a career. But sometimes famous musicians take
their music with them to the grave. Nearly a century after Bach's death, it needed Mendelssohn to revive interest in his music
asks how this affects the way we listen.

  • "The Colour of Money ", Music and Fashion, 29/01/06 (Part 5 of 6)
Sound recordings, radio and television have completely changed the way we hear music. They've also affected
our responses. For one thing, fashions move in and out of our lives faster than ever before. An instant hit
in January is seldom a hit in June. In the 1940s, classical music was part of mainstream radio. The
expression "popular classics" wasn't an oxymoron. But as commercial music became multinational, not only
classical music but also jazz lost its popularity. Could we possibly be witnessing the death throes of
certain types of music, simply because powerful corporations have convinced us they are unfashionable?

  • "Stardust Memories ", Music and Fashion, 5/02/06 (Part 6 of 6)
There's nothing new about nostalgia. Looking back is reassuring in times of uncertainty and,
although nostalgia might seem to be the very opposite of fashion, in fact it can create new
fashions. Nostalgia for a time when the world still had style leads to cocktail drinking and
Diana Krall. Nostalgia for a time when we were all in touch with our spirituality leads to an
enthusiasm for Gregorian chant. Nostalgia for simpler times when people just sat around in
huts and made up songs leads to World Music. Of course, it's possible that such times never
    actually existed...
