General book collection

Items that carry BioMed prefix are on the second floor.

Folio books

Oversized books BioMed gf are kept in shelves on the South End of the second floor at the end of the BioMed H collection.

Older material

The Brownless BioMedical library has three separate locations for older material.

ST books

Items published after 1910 which have demonstrated low use are shelved in compactus shelving in the basement and have prefix BioMed ST on call numbers. Items from this collection are for loan and browsing is possible in this area. BioMed ST f material is available for loan and is shelved in the Rare Book room but may be retrieved by attendants.

STX books

These books have been published generally between 1850 and 1910. Items in this collection are not for loan or browsing. Some items from this collection are catalogued only in the Medicine card catalogue in the library. Requests for reading items from the STX collection may be made at the Loans desk. Items will be transferred for reading in the Special Collections Reading Room in the Baillieu Library.

Journals

Newly arrived journals on display

Items received via air mail are displayed separately from the surface mailed titles. Newly arrived items are put out on display generally on Friday and for one week.

Unbound and Bound Journals 1990 - Current

Journals, prefixed with BioMed P, are arranged by title in alphabetical order. Journals removed from the display area are shelved with the bound volumes on the first floor.

Bound Journals prior to 1990

Volumes are shelved in alphabetical order in compactus shelving in the basement. Titles from the Zoology and Botany collection can be borrowed for two days by staff and postgraduate students of the relevant departments. Generally journals may not be borrowed from the Medical and Dental collection. Academic staff and students registered in Masters or Ph D program may request permission to borrow these for 2 hour loan period in the following circumstances:

    • Copying of photos
    • Colour photocopies
    • Scan material into a computer

Requests may be made at the loans desk, items borrowed must be handed back to the Loans Desk on return.

The Audio-Visual collection

The library holds a small collection of:

    • Videos
    • Slides and audio tapes
    • Computer programs with special relevance to medical and related areas

Material is classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification. The library catalogue has the capacity to limit catalogue searches to audio-visual material. Consult the librarian at the Information Desk for assistance.

The CD-ROM collection is located on the ground floor. Video and slide collections are located in the basement. Audio-visual materials are available for loan.

The library provides facilities for viewing videos and slides. Users have access to VHS as well as Umatic video players. A slide/cassette player is available upon request at the Information desk.

The video collection in the library includes VHS PAL, VHS NTSC and UMATIC formats. The VHS NTSC may not be suitable for all home video machines. The UMATIC format can only be viewed in the ERC Media Collection.

History of Medicine

The History of Medicine collection is an open collection located on the south end of the second floor . Books from this collection have BioMed H prefix and general loan rules apply.

The Ann Tovell Archives are on permanent loan to this library from the Australian Medical Association, Victoria branch. It was compiled during the 1950's to 1980's by Ann Tovell and Bryan Gandevia and contains a wide variety of materials relating to the history of medicine in Australia, in particular Victoria. The archives are particularly strong in biography. The collection is stored in a sequence of numbered envelopes and a card catalogue provides access to the contents.

There is no open access to the collection, requests to consult the archives index and the relevant information have to be made at the Information Desk. Contents from the envelopes are to be consulted at a desk near the Information Desk. Photocopying of items is not permitted. This service is only available between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm on weekdays. Microfiche version of the index is held in the Baillieu Library basement in the Microforms Collection on UniM Baill MIC/f 5465d

Records relating to the registration of doctors in Victoria are kept in the Victoria State Archives, Public Records Office, Tel. 9348 5600.
Records relating to the history of the Australian Medical Association, minute books etc. are kept by the AMA, 293 Royal Pde Parkville, Tel. 9280 8722.
