George Frideric Handel. XXIV [LXV] Overtures Fitted To The Harpsicord Or Spinnet (1750-1758) Six Overtures For Violins &C. In Seven Parts… Tenth Collection (1749)

Handel’s principal publisher from about 1730 on was the younger John Walsh. In addition to publishing various operas and oratorios individually, he published comprehensive collections of all the overtures, both in parts and in harpsichord arrangements, issued in 11 sets of 6 each. As he could only find 65, an arrangement of the Coronation Anthem “Zadok the Priest” made up the numbers. The Music Library has a complete set of the harpsichord arrangements and a few parts from the 9 th and 10 th collections.

The “2nd Overture in Solomon” reproduced here in the harpsichord arrangement and the 1 st oboe part, is otherwise known as “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.”
