Johann Strauss the Younger. Gartenlaube -Walzer (1895) (Illustration by Oscar Gräf)
Die Gartenlaube (“Garden Bower”) was a long running “illustrated family magazine” well known for including literary and artistic items. In 1894 it commissioned from the elderly “Waltz King” a set of waltzes which were published in this special supplement to the first issue of 1895. Despite a favourable reception at its premiere on January 6 th 1895 from an audience which included Brahms and Goldmark, and a performance (under the composer’s brother Eduard) at Buckingham Palace a few months later, the work failed to win the popularity it would seem to deserve.
