UniM Music 781.43 ADOR
Adorno, Theodor W., 1903-1969.
Towards a theory of musical reproduction : notes, a draft and two schemata / Theodor W. Adorno ; edited by Henri Lonitz ; translated by Wieland Hoban.
Cambridge, UK ; Malden, MA : Polity, c2006.
Summary: "In the various notes and texts brought together in Towards a Theory of Musical Reproduction, one finds Adorno constantly circling around an irresolvable paradox: interpretation can only fail the work, yet only through it can music's true essence be captured. While he at times seems more definite in his pronouncement of a musical score's absolute value - just as a book is read silently, not aloud - his discourse repeatedly displays his inability to cling to that belief. It is this quality of uncertainty in his reflections that truly indicates the scope of the discourse and its continuing relevance to musical thought and practice today."--BOOK JACKET.

UniM Music 780.92 SCHO/ CHER
Cherlin, Michael.
Schoenberg's musical imagination.
Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2007.
Series: Music in the 20th century
Music in the twentieth century.
Contents: 1. A passing of worlds : Gurrelieder as Schoeberg's reluctant farewell to the nineteenth century -- 2. Dialectical opposition in Schoenberg's music and thought -- 3. Dramatic conflict in Pelleas und Melisande -- 4. Motive and memory in Schoenberg's First String Quartet -- 5. Uncanny expressions of time in the music of Arnold Schoenberg -- 6. The tone row as the source of dramatic conflict in Moses und Aron -- 7. The strong trio : metaleptic Schoenberg.
Summary: "No composer was more responsible for changes in the landscape of twentieth-century music than Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), and no other composer's music inspired a commensurate quantity and quality of technical description in the second half of the twentieth century. Yet there is still little understanding of the correlations between Schoenberg's musical thought and larger questions of cultural significance in and since his time: the formalistic descriptions of music theory do not generally engage larger questions in the history of ideas, and scholars without an understanding of the formidable musical technique are ill-equipped to understand the music with any profundity of thought. Schoenberg's Musical Imagination is intended to connect Schoenberg's music and critical writings to a larger world of ideas. While most technical studies of Schoenberg's music are limited to a single compositional period, this book traces changes in his attitudes as a composer, and their impact on his ever-changing compositional style over the course of his remarkable career."--BOOK JACKET.

Hall-Witt, Jennifer.
Fashionable acts : opera and elite culture in London, 1780-1880.
Durham : University of New Hampshire Press ; Hanover : Published by University Press of New England, c2007.
Series: Becoming modern
Summary: "In a reassessment of British aristocratic culture, Hall-Witt demonstrates how the transformation of audience behavior at London's Italian opera - from the sociable, interactive spectatorship of the 1780s to the quiet, polite listening of the 1870s - served as a sensitive barometer of the aristocracy's changing authority. She explores how the opera participated in the patronage culture and urban sociability of the British elite prior to the Reform Act of 1832 when the opera served as the central meeting place for the ruling class during the parliamentary session. The vertical tiers of boxes at the opera highlighted not only the gendered nature of elite political culture, but also those features of aristocratic society most vulnerable to critique by political and moral reformers." "Hall-Wittshows how the elite adjusted its behavior in public venues, like the opera, partly in response to such criticisms. Offering a revised chronology for the decline of the British aristocracy based on such cultural compromises, Hall-Witt reveals how the very adaptations that helped the landed elite to survive as the ruling class into the Victorian period also undermined its ability to maintain its power in the long run."--BOOK JACKET.

In essays which span his earliest work in the field and his more recent contributions to journals, anthologies, and conference proceedings, Kivy considers the origin of music, the medium of expression in opera, the role of music in film, the nature of an 'ideal' performance, and the question of whether absolute music has a meaning, among other issues. Rich with critical analysis and informed by the history of both philosophy and music, this volume will be of interest to anyone who likes not only to listen to music, but to think about it as well."--BOOK JACKET.

UniM Music 780.92 PLAZ/ LABO
Labonville, Marie Elizabeth, 1954-
Juan Bautista Plaza and musical nationalism in Venezuela.
Published Bloomington : Indiana University Press, c2007.
Summary: "Juan Bautista Plaza (1898-1965) was the central composer in Venezuela for much of the twentieth century. In addition to writing numerous masses and several large orchestral works, Plaza was the leading figure in Venezuelan music education and musicology. His efforts to improve musical institutions in his home country parallel those of other contemporary Latin American composers, induding Guarnieri in Brazil." "Plaza's life and music are little studied; there is only one book, in Spanish, about the composer. Labonville's ambitious work is the first to use Plaza's extensive collection of writings and compositions in an English-language study. Parts of the book look exhaustively at Plaza's music criticism, his relations with the Venezuelan press, and his activities as a choral director. As evidenced by these artifacts, Plaza filled numerous roles in Venezuela's musical infrastructure including researcher, performer, teacher, composer, promoter, and critic. Labonville examines Plaza in these roles in an attempt to assess how the nationalist spirit affected art music culture in Venezuela and what changes it brought to Venezuela's musical landscape."--BOOK JACKET.

McCarthy, Kerry Robin.
Liturgy and contemplation in Byrd's Gradualia.
New York : Routledge, c2007.
Contents: 1. The Gradualia cycle : genre and presentation -- 2. "Meditate these Wel" : English Catholic encounters with sacred texts -- 3. Liturgical practice and English Catholic identity -- 4. Text types and settings -- 5. Chronology and narrative.
Summary: "Liturgy and Contemplation in Byrd's Gradualia responds to Byrd's own testimony by exploring how he read the texts of the Mass and the events of the church calendar. Kerry McCarthy examines early modern English Catholic attitudes toward liturgical practice, meditation, and what the composer himself called "thinking over divine things." She draws on a wide range of contemporary sources - devotional treatises, commentaries on the Mass, poetry, memoirs, letters, and Byrd's dedicatory prefaces - and revisits the Gradualia in light of this evidence. The book offers a case study of how one artist reimagined the creative process in the final decades of his life."--BOOK JACKET.

Mera, Miguel.
Mychael Danna's The ice storm : a film score guide.

Mera carefully examines the collaborative processes that influenced the score's development, describing the significance of the composer's relationships with the director, producer, editor, orchestrator, and sound designers to the evolution of the score and demonstrating how the politics of filmmaking interact with creativity. This seventh volume in Scarecrow's Film Score Guide series also includes a biography of Danna and a complete analysis of the full soundtrack considering the sound design, pre-existent pop songs, and the specifically arranged song by David Bowie in conjunction with Danna's fascinating score, making this essential reading for film music scholars and students."--BOOK JACKET.
