Leman, Marc, 1958-
Embodied music cognition and mediation technology.
Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, c2008.
Contents: 1. Musical experience and signification -- 2. Paradigms of music research -- 3. Ecological conceptions -- 4. Corporeal articulations and intentionality -- 5. Corporeal articulations and imitation -- 6. Interaction with musical instruments -- 7. Search for and retrieval of music.
Summary: "Digital media handle music as encoded physical energy, but humans consider music in terms of beliefs, intentions, interpretations, experiences, evaluations, and significations. In this book, drawing on work in computer science, psychology, brain science, and musicology, Marc Leman proposes an embodied cognition approach to music research that will help bridge this gap. Assuming that the body plays a central role in all musical activities, and basing his approach on a hypothesis about the relationship between musical experience (mind) and sound energy (matter), Leman argues that the human body is a biologically designed mediator that transfers physical energy to a mental level - engaging experiences, values, and intentions and, reversing the process, transfers mental representation into material form. He suggests that this idea of the body as mediator offers a promising framework for thinking about music mediation technology."--BOOK JACKET.

Stevens, Carolyn S., 1963-
Japanese popular music : culture, authenticity, and power.
London ; New York : Routledge, 2008.
Series: Routledge media, culture and social change in Asia ; 9
Media, culture, and social change in Asia series ; 9.
Contents: 1. Introduction -- 2. Definitions -- 3. The particulars of history -- 4. The business side: connections, culture, and contexts -- 5. Technology, consumption, and authenticity -- 6. Translations: "internationalizing" language and music -- App. Major record labels in Japan.
Summary: "Japanese popular culture has been steadily increasing in visibility both in Asia and beyond in recent years. This book examines Japanese popular music, exploring its historical development, technology, business and production aspects, audiences, and language and culture. Based both on extensive textual and aural analysis and on anthropological fieldwork, it provides a wealth of detail, finding differences as well as similarities between the Japanese and Western pop music scenes. It shows how Japanese popular music has responded over time to Japan's relationship to the West in the post-war era, gradually growing in independence from the political and cultural hegemonic presence of America."--BOOK JACKET.
