The pursuit of high culture : John Ella and chamber music in Victorian London.
Woodbridge, UK ; Rochester, NY : Boydell Press, 2007.
Series: Music in Britain, 1600-1900
Bibliog. Includes bibliographical references (p. [377]-380) and index.
Summary: "This investigation of the consumption of high musical culture among leisured society in Victorian London focuses on the activities of the concert manager John Ella and his Musical Union (1845-81), an eminent, long-lived institution for chamber music, much feted across Europe in its day." "A biography of Ella is combined with a social-economic history of the Musical Union, its players, repertoire and audiences, set against the gradually shifting contexts for London concerts, chamber music and cultural life." "Ella's extraordinary life story, which began in provincial, artisan-class obscurity and ended in the upper echelons of London society, shapes the narrative. Such themes as entrepreneurship, concert management and promotion, taste shaping, music appreciation and elite social networks are discussed throughout, as is the curious interplay between the desire to 'sacralize' chamber music, especially Beethoven's, on the one hand, and the need to survive amid the increasing commercial imperatives of London concert life on the other."--BOOK JACKET.

Summary: "In this third edition of the classic Verdi, renowned authority Julian Budden offers a comprehensive overview of Verdi the man and the artist. Budden traces his ascent from humble beginnings to the status of a cultural patriarch of the new Italy, whose cause he had done much to promote, while demonstrating the gradual enlargement of his artistic vision over the years." "This concise study is an accessible, insightful, and engaging summation of Verdi scholarship, acquainting the non-specialist with the personal details of Verdi's life, with the operatic world in which he worked, and with his political ideas, his intellectual vision, and his powerful means of communicating them through his music. In his survey of the music itself, Budden emphasizes the unique character of each work as well as the developing sophistication of Verdi's style. He covers all of the operas, the late religious works, the songs, and the string quartet. A glossary explains even the most obscure operatic terms current in Verdi's time."--BOOK JACKET.

Foulkes-Levy, Laurdella.
Journeys through the life and music of Nancy Van de Vate / Laurdella Foulkes-Levy, Burt J. Levy.
Lanham, Md. : Scarecrow Press, 2005.
Summary: "Journeys through the Life and Music of Nancy Van de Vate provides a wealth of insight into this twentieth-century composer. Foulkes-Levy and Levy survey her compositions through 2001 and recount many of Van de Vate's anecdotes as told to them, revealing much about the origins of her compositions, feminist views, and musical theory." "After tracing Van de Vate's tumultuous life experiences, both personal and professional, including teaching positions at various American universities and eventual residence in Vienna, the authors undertake a close examination of the composer's musical works. The chapters devoted to her music explore the composer's thematic and formal procedures, the use of modality, and her wide-ranging harmonic vocabulary, which give the music a unique voice within the context of a relatively dissonant style. Accompanying these analyses are copious musical examples from Van de Vate's large repertoire of scores." "Journeys through the Life and Music of Nancy Van de Vate is further enhanced by an audio CD featuring the five large Van de Vate works, discussed in individual chapters, as well as portions of other characteristic compositions. With two bibliographies and three appendixes, this work will be invaluable to scholars of twentieth-century music and those specializing in women's studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Summary: "Music in the Women's Institute has become stereotyped by the ritualistic singing of Jerusalem at monthly meetings. Indeed, Jerusalem has had an important role within the organization, and provides a valuable means within which to assess the organization's relationship with women's suffrage and the importance of rurality in the Women's Institute's identity. However, this book looks beyond Jerusalem by examining the full range of music making within the organization and locates its significance within a wider historical-cultural context. The Institute's promotion of conducting - a regular part of its musical activity since the 1930s - is discussed within the context of embodying overtly feminist sentiments. Lorna Gibson concludes that a redefinition of the term 'feminism' is needed and the concept of 'gendered spheres' of conducting provides a useful means of understanding the Institute's policy. The organization's promotion of folk song is also examined and reveals the Institute's contribution to the Folk Revival, as well as providing a valuable context within which to understand the National Federation's first music commission, Ralph Vaughan Williams's Folk Songs of the Four Seasons (1950). This work, and the Institute's second commission, Malcolm Williamson's The Brilliant and The Dark (1969), are examined within the context of the organization's music policy. In addition to discussing the background to the works, issues of critical reception are addressed. The book concludes with an Epilogue about the National Society Choir (later known as the Avalon Singers), which tested the organization's commitment to amateur music making."--BOOK JACKET.

Summary: "This book is about historical performance practice in its broadest sense. A veteran of the early music movement and an experienced performer himself, Bruce Haynes begins by identifying the most common performing styles, using and comparing sound recordings from the past. To help musicians distinguish between Period and Romantic styles, he expertly engages with the most current - and controversial - topics in the field in defining the differences between them. Throughout, he presents many compelling arguments for using pre-Romantic values as inspiration to re-examine and correct Romantic assumptions about performance. This book also offers a fresh perspective on a broad spectrum of questions about music in history."--BOOK JACKET.

The permanent underground: Australian contemporary jazz in the new millenium.
[Sydney] : Currency House, 2008.
Series: Platform papers: quarterly essays on the performing arts ; April 2008 ; no. 16.
Plus readers' responses to A Sustainable Arts Sector, Platform papers, No. 15.
Summary: "Contemporary Australian jazz, by any measure, is flourishing, writes Peter Rechniewski. More talent, more recording, more audience development, widespread respect for our musicians overseas. So why is the jazz scene sick and like to die? Why do musicians eke out the barest living? Why do old venues close and no new ones replace them? Why is jazz held in such low esteem by the media? For all its apparent vitality, jazz remains in crisis. Peter Rechniewski is well-placed to diagnose the problems and recommend a cure. In this hard-hitting account he traces the origins of the current crisis and proposes a new National Jazz Plan to raise the profile, increase the audiences, lift income levels and enhance the career pathways of a growing number of musicians. Jazz, he writes, demands an urgent revision of both the public and governmental attitudes if we are to 'liberate jazz from its imprisonment in a permanent underground'."--Publisher's website.

Musicking : the meanings of performing and listening.
Hanover: University Press of New England, c1998.
Series Music/culture
Notes "Wesleyan University Press."
Summary: "Extending the inquiry of his early groundbreaking books, Christopher Small strikes at the heart of traditional studies of Western music by asserting that music is not a thing, but rather an activity. This new work outlines a theory of what Small terms "musicking," a verb that encompasses all musical activity from composing to performing to listening to a Walkman to singing in the shower. Using Gregory Bateson's philosophy of mind and a Geertzian thick description of a typical concert in a typical symphony hall, Small demonstrates how musicking forms a ritual through which all the participants explore and celebrate the relationships that constitute their social identity. This trip through the concert hall will have readers rethinking every aspect of their musical worlds."--BOOK JACKET.

Spitzer, Michael.
Music as philosophy : Adorno and Beethoven's late style.
Bloomington, Ind. : Indiana University Press ; Chesham : Combined Academic [distributor], 2006.
Series: Musical meaning and interpretation
Contents: 1. Away with all rules? -- 2. Styles -- 3. Adorno's Beethoven -- 4. Late landscapes -- 5. Invisible cities -- 6. Ways of world making -- 7. Kunstvereinigung -- 8. Caesura of the classical style -- 9. The persistence of critical theory.
Summary: "Beethoven's late style is epitomized by his ninth symphony, the Missa Solemnis, the Diabelli Variations, the Bagatelles, as well as five piano sonatas, five string quartets, and several smaller piano works. Historically, these works are seen as forging a bridge between the Classical and Romantic traditions: in terms of their musical structure, they continue to be regarded as revolutionary."
"Michael Spitzer's book examines these late works in light of the musical and philosophical writings of the German intellectual Theodor Adorno, and in doing so, attempts to reconcile the conflicting approaches of musical semiotics and critical theory. He draws from various approaches to musical, linguistic, and aesthetic meaning, relating Adorno to such writers as Derrida, Benjamin, and Habermas, as well as contemporary music theorists. Through analyses of Beethoven's use of specific musical techniques (including neo-Baroque fugues and counterpoint), Spitzer suggests that the composer's last works offer a philosophical and musical critique of the Enlightenment, and in doing so created the musical language of premodernism."--BOOK JACKET.
