Clifton, Keith E., 1967-
Recent American art song : a guide / Keith E. Clifton.
Lanham, Md. : Scarecrow Press, 2008.
Summary: "Recent American Art Song: A Guide is devoted to songs with English texts by American composers written for solo voice and piano. The book focuses exclusively on art song since 1980, a substantial period largely ignored by scholars. This is the first study to examine this repertory in detail, and many of the songs and composers are covered in print for the first time." "Keith E. Clifton has examined approximately one thousand songs by nearly two hundred composers; Many songs employ musical idioms well beyond traditional classical styles, including jazz, musical theater, rap, and rock and roll, and several songs blur the boundaries between recital and stage works. Organized alphabetically by composer, entries contain complete biographical and bibliographical information, with major works and links to print resources and composer websites when available. In addition, Clifton provides detailed information on the vocal range, musical style, and appropriate voice type for individual songs. The book concludes with a full discography and bibliography, as well as indexes listing the works by poet, song cycle, title, voice type, and level of difficulty."--BOOK JACKET.

Published Aldershot, Hants ; Burlington, VT : Ashgate, c2006.
Series: Ashgate popular and folk music series. Contents: Introduction : White boys-- -- Reviewing theories and representations of masculinities -- Powerless power : masculine intellectualism and aesthetics -- What does it mean to be alternative : indie guitar rock as a genre -- The singer or the song : homosociality, genre, and gender -- Someone controls electric guitar : indie and technologies -- What will I do if she dies? : music, misery, and masculinities -- Conclusion : --white noise.
Summary: "Matthew Bannister makes an in-depth examination of indie guitar rock in the 1980s as the culturally and historically specific production of white men. Through textual analysis of musical and critical discourses, Bannister provides the first book-length study of masculinity and ethnicity within the context of indie guitar music within US, UK and New Zealand 'scenes'."
"Drawing on his own experience as an indie musician, Bannister surveys a range of indie artists, including The Smiths, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and The Go-Betweens; from the US, R.E.M., The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du, Nirvana and hardcore; and from NZ, Flying Nun acts, including The Chills, The Clean, the Verlaines, Chris Knox, Bailter Space, and The Bats, demonstrating broad continuities between these apparently disparate scenes, in terms of gender, aesthetic theory and approaches to popular musical history. The result is a book which raises some important questions about how gender is studied in popular culture and the degree to which alternative cultures can critique dominant representations of gender."--BOOK JACKET.

Notes: "An Ahmanson Foundation book in the humanities"--Jacket flap.
Bibliography: Includes bibliographical references (p. 233-262) and index.
Summary: "Brecht at the Opera takes a systematic look at the German playwright's lifelong ambivalent engagement with opera. An ardent opera lover in his youth, Brecht later denounced the genre as decadent and irrelevant to modern society, even as he continued to work on opera projects throughout his career. In this book, Joy H. Calico argues that Brecht's simultaneous work on opera and Lehrstucke in the 1920s generated a new concept of audience experience that would come to define epic theater, and that his revisions to the theory of Gestus in the mid-1930s are reminiscent of nineteenth-century opera performance practices of mimesis. Calico further considers Brecht's concept of estrangement as the dominant aesthetic in today's Regieoper, or radical productions of canonical operas. This highly original study demonstrates the myriad ways in which opera shaped Brecht's most influential theories about theater and the works he created for the stage."--BOOK JACKET.

New York : Oxford University Press, 2008.

Summary: "Music in Chopin's Warsaw examines the rich musical environment of Fryderyk Chopin's youth - largely unknown to the English-speaking world - and places Chopin's early works in the context of this milieu. Halina Goldberg provides a historiographic perspective that allows a new and better understanding of Poland's cultural and musical circumstances. Chopin's Warsaw emerges as a vibrant European city that was home to an Opera house, various smaller theaters, one of the earliest modern conservatories in Europe, several societies that organized concerts, musically active churches, spirited salon life, music publishers and bookstores, instrument builders, and for a short time even a weekly paper devoted to music." "Warsaw was aware of and in tune with the most recent European styles and fashions in music, but it was also the cradle of a vernacular musical language that was initiated by the generation of Polish composers before Chopin and which found its full realization in his work. Had Chopin been born a decade earlier or a decade later, Goldberg argues, the capital - devastated by warfare and stripped of all cultural institutions - could not have provided support for his talent. The young composer would have been compelled to seek musical education abroad and thus would have been deprived of the specifically Polish experience so central to his musical style."--BOOK JACKET.

Music historian Mary Hunter provides an introduction to each opera for any listener who has enjoyed a performance, either on the stage or in a video recording, and who wishes to understand the opera more fully." "The Companion includes a synopsis and commentary on each work, as well as background information on the three main genres in which Mozart wrote: opera seria, opera buffa and Singspiel. An essay on the 'anatomy' of a Mozart opera points out the musical conventions with which the composer worked and suggests nontechnical ways to think about his musical choices. The book also places modern productions of the operas in historical context and explores how modern directors, producers and conductors present Mozart's works today. Filled with factual information and interesting issues to ponder while watching a performance, this guide will appeal to newcomers and seasoned opera aficionados alike."--BOOK JACKET.

Summary: "In the past, music therapy with children typically took place in special schools without the family being present. More recently, music therapy has become a widespread practice, and this book reflects the variety of settings within which music therapists are now working with children together with their families." "The contributors are music therapists with experience of working with children and their families in a range of different environments, such as schools, hospices, psychiatric units, child development centres and in the community. They describe their approaches to family work with client groups including children with autism, learning-disabled toddlers, adopted children and looked-after teenagers. Their experiences demonstrate that involving the family in a child's music therapy can be beneficial for everyone, and that it is possible to address relationship issues within the family as part of the treatment." "This book will provide useful insight into the growing area of music therapy with children and their families, and will be of interest to therapy professionals and students, as well as other medical and teaching professionals who work with families."--BOOK JACKET.
