The author traces patterns of Wagner's visits to Venice during his lifetime, considers what the city came to mean to Wagner, and investigates the details surrounding his death. Barker also examines how Venice viewed Wagner, by analyzing the landmark presentation of Wagner's Ring cycle two months after the composer's death, and by considering Venice's subsequent extensive Wagner celebrations and commemorations." Her work provides a unique cross-cultural window into the rich musical cultures of these cities, yet owing to her clandestine existence in France, for almost three centuries Bembo's life was shrouded in mystery. In this biography, Claire Fontijn unveils the story of a remarkable woman who moved in the musical, literary, and artistic circles of these European cultural centers." Compositions by Bartok broadcast on Hungarian radio, 18 September to 1 October 1950.
Summary: "Music Divided explores how political pressures affected musical life on both sides of the iron curtain during the early years of the cold war. In this groundbreaking study, Danielle Fosler-Lussier illuminates the pervasive political anxieties of the day through particular attention to artistic, music-theoretical, and propagandistic responses to the music of Hungary's most renowned twentieth-century composer, Bela Bartok. She shows how a tense period of political transition plagued Bartok's music and imperiled those who took a stand on its aesthetic value in the emerging socialist state. Her fascinating investigation of Bartok's reception outside of Hungary demonstrates that Western composers, too, formulated their ideas about musical style under the influence of ever-escalating cold war tensions."--BOOK JACKET.

Film as Visual Music: Duplication, Dissonance, and Displacement -- 8. Amerikamude/Europamude: The Actuality of American Opera.
Summary: "In this new book, Lydia Goehr focuses on the history of elective affinities between philosophy and music from German classicism, romanticism, and idealism to the modernist aesthetic theory of Theodor W. Adorno and Arthur C. Danto. Aesthetic theory, she argues, depends on a dynamic philosophy of history centered on tendencies, yearnings, needs, and potentialities. With this in mind, she recasts the theses of Adorno and Danto regarding the death or end of philosophy, art, music, and human experience as arguments for continuation and survival. Elective Affinities tracks the migration of aesthetic and critical theory from Germany to the United States following the catastrophic period of the twentieth century marked by the Second World War."--BOOK JACKET.

Musical instruments - from the simplest whistles to the most complex organs, from conch trumpets to sousaphones, from archers' and musical bows to violins and pianos, the most basic straw reeds to modern MIDI systems, and pairs of stones struck together to synthesizers - are all described by instrument collector and expert Jeremy Montagu. Montagu speculates on how these instruments originated and relates how they moved from one culture to another through history, all the while evolving into today's modern instruments." "Each chapter is devoted to a different type of instrument. Intervals and additional sections enhance the text with information on musicians, the Medieval Renaissance, the ideal accompaniment, archaeology, symbiotic and newly created instruments, classification of instruments, scales and music, and some of the problems of acoustics. This comprehensive volume is illustrated with more than 120 photos capturing several hundred instruments from all over the world, many of them from the author's own collection of more than 2,500 instruments. Bartók, Hungary, and the renewal of tradition : case studies in the intersection of modernity and nationality.
Berkeley : Univesity of California Press, c2006.
Series: California studies in 20th-century music, 5
Contents: 1. Tradition rejected : Bartok's polemics and the nineteenth-century Hungarian musical inheritance -- 2. Tradition maintained : nationalism, Verbunkos, Kossuth, and the Rhapsody, Op. 1 -- 3. Tradition transformed : "the night's music" and the pastoral roots of a modern style -- 4. Tradition challenged : confronting Stravinsky -- 5. Tradition transcribed : the Rhapsody for Volin No. 1, the politics of folk-music research, and the artifice of authenticity -- 6. Tradition restored : the violin concerto, Verbunkos, and Hungary on the eve of World War II.
Summary: "It is well known that Bela Bartok had an extraordinary ability to synthesize Western art music with the folk music of Eastern Europe. What this study makes clear is that, contrary to much prevailing thought about the great twentieth-century Hungarian composer, Bartok was also strongly influenced by the art-music traditions of his native country. Drawing from a wide array of material, including contemporary reviews and little-known Hungarian documents, David Schneider presents a new approach to Bartok that acknowledges the composer's debt to a variety of Hungarian music traditions as well as to influential contemporaries such as Igor Stravinsky. Considering representative works from each decade - from Bartok's graduation from the Music Academy in 1903 to his departure for the United States in 1940 - Schneider reads the composer's artistic output as both a continuation and a profound transformation of the very national tradition that Bartok repeatedly rejected in public. By clarifying why Bartok felt compelled to obscure his ties to the past and by illuminating what that past actually was, Schneider dispels myths about Bartok's relationship to nineteenth-century traditions and at the same time provides a new perspective on the relationship between nationalism and modernism in early twentieth-century music."--BOOK JACKET.

Wright, Owen.
Touraj Kiaras and Persian classical music : an analytical perspective.
Burlington, VT : Ashgate, c2008.
Series: SOAS musicology series
Accompanying CD contains audio examples. Summary: "In this book Owen Wright analyses a single recording of classical Persian music made by Touraj Kiaras, a distinguished singer, accompanied by four noted instrumentalists. The format of the recording is typical of a public concert performance, and thus includes instrumental compositions as well as a central exploration of vocal repertoire and technique. The analysis identifies salient structural features, whether of the individual components or of the whole, in a way accessible to the western reader, but it also takes account of the analytical metalanguage used in Persian scholarship, and includes consideration of the relationship between music and poetry. It is important to note that it is also guided by the perceptions of the performer, whose input and responses to questions have significantly influenced the enterprise.
To avoid the dryly impersonal, the analysis is also framed by an introduction which combines a biographical sketch of Touraj Kiaras with a survey of the twentieth-century evolution of Persian classical music and of the position of the vocal repertoire within it, and by an epilogue which examines further the ideological basis of prevalent attitudes to music, and seeks to explore the validity of the analytical enterprise within this context." Summary: "Richard Strauss's Orchestral Music and the German Intellectual Tradition breaks new ground in Straussian studies. Charles Youmans provides an investigation of Strauss's private intellectual life and its impact on the brilliant music he created during the formation of his worldview. The composer's works have traditionally been viewed as a product of High German Romanticism, yet Youmans demonstrates that Strauss's entire body of orchestral music can be read as a history of his struggle with specific intellectual-historical concerns."--BOOK JACKET.
