The following sessions will help you enhance your research skills. Current sessions are listed on the Information Skills Classes website where you can check times, venue and make a booking if required.

Introduction to Lenton Parr Library, VCAM, Southbank campus

This is an essential session for new postgraduate students at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts. Music students from the Faculty of Music are also welcome to attend. Learn how to get the most out of the Lenton Parr Library. Even if you have been a student at the Faculties of Music or Victorian College of the Arts previous to enrolling as a postgraduate student, this session is for you too! This session covers: Searching effectively for books, journals, music scores, sound recordings, audiovisual items etc using the UoM catalogue; brief introduction to SuperSearch for all electronic resources; access your borrower record for renewing books and storing searches; place requests for books on loan and available at other University of Melbourne libraries; accessing other university libraries in Melbourne and interstate; and Interlibrary Loans.

DURATION: 1 hour

Music Graduates Program

Graduate students - Introductions to your research libraries

This is an essential session for new graduate students in the Faculty of Music and Music graduates from the Faculty of the Victorian College. Learn about the collections and services available to you. This session covers: searching effectively for books, journals, music scores, sound recordings, audiovisual items etc using the UoM catalogue; brief introduction to SuperSearch for all electronic resources; access your borrower record for renewing books and storing searches; place requests for books on loan and available at other University of Melbourne libraries; accessing other university libraries in Melbourne and interstate; and Interlibrary Loans services.

Finding theses : Getting Started

These sessions will cover locating theses in Australia and overseas (British and North American) via catalogues and databases (including full-text theses) Learn how to locate, borrow or request the library to purchase theses.

Finding journal articles : Getting Started

This session will help you become efficient and effective in searching select databases for music. Students from the School of Music, Faculty of the VCA and the Faculty of Music are welcome to attend. You will learn how to: develop search strategies to find quality information; understand database and search concepts; and search electronic databases to retrieve bibliographic resources (citations and select electronic full text).

Visual Arts Research : Getting started.

This session will help you become efficient and effective in searching select databases in the visual arts (including art, film and television). You will learn how to: develop search strategies to find quality information; understand database and search concepts; and search electronic databases to retrieve bibliographic resources (citations and select electronic full text).

Graduate students - Upskills: EndNote Is it for You?
Introduction to Endnote X1 .

This introductory workshop (1.5 hours) provides opportunity for hands-on activity using Endnote X1. The workshop covers the main features of EndNote: creating a library, adding references, downloading references from the library catalogue, inserting references from your EndNote library into a word document, and formatting a bibliography in a research paper.

Top Up Endnote X1 .

This workshop (1.5 hours) provides opportunity for hands-on activity using Endnote X1 for WIN, with a focus on music. The workshop builds on the Introduction to Endnote X1 for Music Researchers for WIN/PC class offered on 30 April. More advanced features will be added to your skill base including downloading references from a database, customising references and preferences, importing references from electronic databases and catalogues using Import Filters and Connection Files, inserting URLS and images.
Note: Before applying for this course, you must have completed an Introduction to Endnote X1 session - for Win/PC.
