Norman Mailer, Why Are We In Vietnam?
Norman Mailer came to the Australian censors’ attention as soon as he began publishing his work. The Literature Censorship Board reluctantly passed his early novels, beginning with The Naked and the Dead in 1948, but his involvement in the counter-culture and his activism against the Vietnam war brought him bans for The American Dream in 1965 and Why Are We In Vietnam? in 1968. Both books were released in 1971.
