Chinese woman in bridal dress

C37

F.E. Forbes. Five years in China, from 1842 to 1847 with an account of the occupation of the islands of Labuan and Borneo by Her Majesty's forces. Taipei: Ch'eng Wen, 1972 [Originally published: London: R. Bentley, 1848], pp. 272-273

Baillieu Library Baill 915.10433 FORB

This memoir by a British naval officer includes an engraving of a Chinese woman in bridal dress. The figure looks portly and European, but the clothing is represented with reasonable accuracy. The artist must have had access to export paintings from China, for the frontpiece of this book is an engraving based on a 'portrait of an empress' similar to that reproduced by Racinet (C17).
