The generous cut and neat neckbands of nineteenth-century dress, shown in the portrait of an unidentified Sichuanese family gave way during the first decade of the twentieth century to the narrow cut and clearly defined collars of robes and tunics worn by the children of future premier Tang Shaoyi (1860-1938).
