John Carroll (1945-) worked as a teacher and publisher's representative before becoming a full-time writer. The publisher, Bruce Pascoe, is best known as founder of the magazine Australian Short Stories.

Catspaw was Carroll's first thriller; his subsequent books, which include No Way Out, Tropic of Fear and Cheaters, have gone on to mainstream commercial success.
