General Book Collection

The library holds books and journals in veterinary medicine and surgery as well as material relating to medicine, agriculture, zoology and botany. The Parkville branch collects generally in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and animal health although there is some duplication between the two locations.

On each catalogue entry there is a location symbol eg.

UniM VetW - Veterinary Science Werribee

UniM VetP - Veterinary Science Parkville

UniM BioMed - Brownless BioMedical Library

together with a Dewey number that locates the item in a numerical sequence close to other books of the same topic eg. UniM VetW 636.8 - books relating to cats

Books with the prefix "st" are stack books (older books) housed in a separate compactus area in Werribee. Ask staff for assistance.

Journals Collection

Details of print journal titles held in the library can be found in the Library Catalogue.
Use SuperSearch to find electronic journals at Find e-Journals.

Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title. Older journals and some back issues are stored in the compactus area at Werribee, and in the general journal collection at Parkville.

Reference Collection

Items in this collection include general and subject encylopaedias, handbooks, veterinary and other dictionaries, directories, abstracts and indexes, pharmacopoeias and atlases.

These items are not for loan.

Reference material appears on the library catalogue as eg. UniM Vet W Ref 636.08903 BLOO

Databases

Access electronic databases at SuperSearch under Find Database. University of Melbourne staff and students should login to SuperSearch using their University of Melbourne email username and password to access all of the available electronic resources.

To find databases in SuperSearch:

Click the Find Database tab in the menu.

You can search for a database:

By Title : Click a letter in the alphabet to see a list of all the databases starting with this letter. You can also specify that the title of the database starts with, contains or is an exact match of the term that you enter. e.g. Medline and select contains Be careful when using Exact title – Medline in exact title produces no results as the full title is Medline (ISI)

Locate: Enter information that identifies the required database by filling in any or all of the title, database vendor, subject, any word, or type fields. E.g. select Veterinary Science from the Subject drop-down menu, and index from the Type drop-down menu

By Subject: You can specify the subject and subcategory of a database. e.g. Subject: Land and Food, and Sub-category: Animal Science and Management

Search in Database:

You can use the Search in Database function to search in the database that you selected from the list of databases found using Find Database. This option is not available on all databases, and if it is not you can search in the database directly by clicking on the database link. For detailed, focussed searches search in the database directly.

You can click on +icon beside the database to save the database into your My Databases list under My Stuff

Selected Veterinary Science and Related Databases

Some databases in veterinary science and related areas are:

CAB Abstracts - indexes literature relating to veterinary science, agriculture and forestry. From 1910 onwards with access to some full-text articles.

Medline - indexes literature relating to the medical and paramedical sciences, and includes access to some full-text articles. From 1950 onwards.

Biosis Previews - access information in the biological and biomedical sciences. Includes access to some full-text articles. From 1969 onwards with access to some full-text articles).

ISI Web of Science - a citation database for the Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences.It includes the Science Citation Index which indexes journal literature relating to veterinary science, agriculture, zoology, medicine. Includes each article's cited reference list, and searchable author abstracts.

ISI Current Contents Connect-  gives access to contents pages and bibliographic citations from thousands of journals. Also includes access to some full-text articles.

ISI Journal Citation Reports - access to journal citation data used to evaluate and compare journals.

ISI Essential Science Indicators - access to essential science performance statistics and science trends including journal citation rankings and analysis.

Scopus - abstract and citation database of research literature and websites in life sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Includes access to some full-text articles.

Expanded Academic ASAP- access to articles (many in full-text) covering agriculture, arts, humanities, social sciences, science and technology. University of Melbourne staff and students need a password for remote access only.

PubMed - covers biology, medicine, biomedicine, pharmacology, nursing, genetics, etc.
Also provides access to some full-text journals.

Access to some databases is by password. Please ask Library Staff for help.

Thesis Collection

The Parkville branch holds most Masters and PhD theses completed at Parkville by Veterinary Science students. At Werribee there is also a collection of theses completed there. There is an in-house catalogue in both locations giving a full list of theses held.

Theses are not for loan.

Veterinary Science theses are also held in the Baillieu Library (or off-site storage), and can be read in the Special Collections area of the Baillieu Library. They can be found on the Library Catalogue.

Audio Visual Collection

This collection is held at Werribee and includes video tapes, slide/tapes, and some DVDs relating to veterinary science.

Material is shelved according to Dewey Decimal Classification. DVDs are held in the Werribee Library office while the slide/tape collection is held in the Werribee library compactus.

There is also a small collection of DVDs and videos held in the Library Office in the Parkville Library.

The Library Catalogue has the capacity to limit searches to audio-visual items only. Please ask Library Staff for help.

Audio-visual materials are for loan to staff and students of the University of Melbourne.

Please note that many of the videos are in the old U-matic format. Slide/tape players are available to view slides in the Werribee library.
