Electronic Journals
You can access electronic journals via SuperSearch or the Library Catalogue.
Access is restricted to staff and students of the University of Melbourne
who can access electronic journals from home or work. Authentication is by University of Melbourne email username and password.
In some cases
passwords are required to access certain electronic journal titles.
These can be emailed to you, or contact Library
staff.
To Find an Electronic Journal in SuperSearch:
Access electronic journals at SuperSearch under Find E-journals.
Click the Find e-Journal tab in the menu.
You can then access an individual e-journal, access holdings in the Library catalogue, access other search options, or add the e-journal to your e-journals list, My e-Journals, under My Stuff.
You can search by Title, Subject, Locate or Find an Item:
Title:
- click on the first letter of the title of the e-journal. The e-journal list displays all e-journals whose title starts with this letter OR
- type in all or part of the e-journal title in the Title field
- Select Starts with or Contains. You can use a question mark as a wild card
e.g. type veter? , and select contains to locate e-journals containing the words veterinary, veterinaria etc)
- click Go
Subject :
Select an appropriate Subject and then SubCategory to get a list of electronic journals in the relevant sub-category e.g. Select either Health Sciences or Agriculture Sciences in Subject, and then select Sub-Category Veterinary Science
Locate :
You can search by title, ISSN, vendor, or subject.
Find an Item:
The purpose of Find an Item is to take you directly to a specific journal article e.g. from a reading list.
- enter details of the article
- complete as many fields as possible
- click on GO
- the Source It window opens with information on holdings
Click on Switch to Detail View in the E-Journal List, or the i button beside the journal to get more information about the journal and when it is available online.
Use Source It to link directly to a particular year, volume or page of a journal. Note that the issue number will usually be required to link directly to the page. Source It links will appear in index records on Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, Biosis Previews, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts to link directly to the article or catalogue holdings.
My e-journals in My Stuff
My e-Journals enables you to browse your personal e-journal list and access individual e-journals.
- Add to the My e-Journals list by clicking the + icon in the Find e-Journal list.
- Click the e-journal name to go to the e-journal's website.
- To display more information about the e-journal, click the i icon
- Click the "-" icon to remove the e-journal from My e-Journals.
To Find an Electronic Journal in the Library Catalogue:
To find electronic journals on the library catalogue search by title e.g. veterinary parasitology, or ISSN. Both print and electronic holdings are listed.
Electronic journal package titles e.g. ScienceDirect Freedom Collection are also on the catalogue, and include a list of associated individual journal titles which can be clicked on to access the full-text journal, or the catalogue record.
You can also restrict your search to online books and journals in the catalogue, and then link to the full-text version. Search for online books and journals by keyword from the front page, or limit any search to records for online books and journals by selecting the dropdown option at Limit search to items in specific libraries or collections which is on all search pages.
Some electronic journal sites in Veterinary Science and related areas are:
PubMed Central (National
Institutes of Health) - access to some full-text journals in medicine
and life sciences.
BioMed Central - access
to full-text journals in biology and medicine. Includes BMC Veterinary
Research journal.
Journals@OVID Full Text - full-text journals in dental science, medicine, nursing and science. On SuperSearch under Find database
