Connection files

The Connect command in EndNote lets you connect direct to online databases and library catalogues, search them from within EndNote, and bring references straight into your library. To do this you must have an active internet connection.

The Connect feature relies on small pieces of software called Connection files. Many are provided as part of the EndNote software installation and are stored in the Connections folder of your EndNote program.

Many Connection files can be downloaded from the EndNote website. Some additional connect files are available from the table below, including a file for the University of Melbourne library catalogue. Not all databases support the Connect feature.

Note that references downloaded from databases might need editing.

See EndNote: Saving and Importing references for tips on using connection files as well as import filters to retrieve records from databases available at the University of Melbourne.

To browse and activate connection files from within your EndNote library:

  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Connect
  • Select Connect again
  • Browse and select the required connection file to open a database.

Instructions for downloading connection files

  • Quit EndNote before you download a connection file
  • Browse table below, or this list on the EndNote website, for file of choice
  • Click on download link (Note: PC users RIGHT CLICK, MAC users OPTION CLICK)
  • Follow prompts to save file to disk
  • Save the file to the Connections Folder of your EndNote Program - on a PC, this is usually at C:/Program Files/EndNote/Connections; on a Mac, this is usually HD/Applications/EndNote/Connections
