Downloading references from databases

Direct Export Method
This method is used for most library databases. References can be exported directly into an EndNote Library from Discovery, from many individual databases and some ejournal collections. Records are ‘marked’ and then exported directly into EndNote. The steps used will vary between databases.
Mac users: note that the Direct Export method from Discovery and other databases is browser dependent. Firefox provides an option to select EndNote as the application to open the exported file. Safari will place the exported file into the Download directory and it will then need to be imported from within EndNote using the Import function.Import Filter Method
In some cases where a database does not provide Direct Export to EndNote, there is an Import Filter available within EndNote. Database records are saved as text files using a database-specific method and then imported in EndNote via the appropriate Import Filter.
Mac users may need to use the Import Filter method if Direct Export does not work. (see note above)Connection File/Online Search Method
Connection Files are EndNote files used to connect to and search databases or catalogues from within EndNote. While EndNote provides hundreds of Connection Files from a variety of sources (databases and catalogues) only publicly available sources can be used by the University of Melbourne community. The Connection Files that can be used successfully include: the University of Melbourne Library Catalogue, PubMed and the Library of Congress catalogue. Other Connection Files that will allow access are individual Library Catalogues, of which there are over 2000 options. The Web of Science Connection File can also be used from computers on campus only.
* Important: Always proof-read records exported into EndNote for quality. Records may require editing, e.g. incorrect title, capitalisation, incomplete data, duplicate authors, or incorrect importing of reference type.
