EndNote & Word
Sometimes there are problems installing EndNote with some versions of MS Word, e.g. XP/2003 . In some installations the add-ins for the EndNote toolbar fail to load automatically into Word's Start-up folder. After installing Endnote an EndNote toolbar should appear in Word. The fix requires the copying of two files from Endnote into the Word Start-up folder. Refer to the following instructions:

Upgrading to a newer version of EndNote
After installing EndNote X.02
- When you open your library for the first time, EndNote will offer to create a converted version of the library, with a new name. The original library will remain intact. You should keep a copy of the original library and store it in a safe place, in case you later decide to revert to an earlier version of EndNote. You can change the name of the original library.
- The references in the new, converted library in EndNote X will have the same record numbers as in the original library in your earlier version of EndNote.
- When you open a Word document which you had been working on using an earlier version of EndNote, you can continue to add citations to it in the normal way. You may need to use the Format Bibliography command on the EndNote toolbar or menu to format citations which you had unformatted before upgrading.
- Any output styles, filters or connection files that you had been using in an earlier version of EndNote should still work in EndNote X. However the output styles will not be configured to format the reference types which are new in EndNote X,such as Electronic Article.
- Open MS Word to see if the EndNote toolbar has loaded automatically. If not you may need to to manually install EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools into Word's StartUp folder, in order to get the programs to work together.
