EndNote styles
Styles
Styles are files that are used to control the appearance of references
in a bibliography. The name of the style often refers to the journal
or publisher that has defined the bibliographic format. EndNote comes with 3000+ styles. Styles are selected and added to your style favourites.
To browse and select Styles from within your EndNote library:
- Click on the Edit menu
- Select Output Styles
- Select Open Style Manager
- Browse the list of styles alphabetically by title, or click on Find to see styles grouped by discipline or to search for a style By Name, e.g. APA 5th, Vancouver, Chicago 15a
- Highlight the style name and make sure a tick appears next to it in the left hand column
- Close the Style Manager. Your selected styles will appear in the Style favourites pull-down menu in the EndNote Library window.
To edit a style:
Styles can be modified using EndNote's Style Manager.
- Editing a style requires a general understanding of how styles work and the components of a style. Read the Basic Components of a Style section in EndNote Help - accessed within the program from the Help menu.
- To edit a style you need to have administrator access/permissions for the style folder inside your EndNote program folder. University-owned computers usually have restricted access to this location. Speak to your department's IT staff for assistance.
- From the Edit menu, choose Output Style > Open Style Manager. Select the file to edit and click Edit. The most recently used style can also be opened by selecting Output Styles from the Edit menu, and choosing Edit <style>.
- It is important to only edit a copy of the original style file, e.g. add a suffix to the style name APA_amended or APA2.
- The new amended style then needs to be selected for the EndNote library (see instructions for selecting styles above)

Caution: Saving the RefTypeTable file will override your existing file and any changes you made to the existing RefTypeTable. You may manually edit the RefTypeTable as an alternative to replacing it - ask the LRC for more information. Read the Wiki created for EndNote & AGLC users: http://endnoteaglc.pbwiki.com/ |

Harvard Style It is recommended that you do not use the Harvard output style supplied with the EndNote program. There are many interpretations of the Harvard Style, however the Harvard style supplied with EndNote will not generally suit departmental requirements at the University. e.g. Harvard in EndNote XI and X displays author names in capital letters, whilst in EndNote 7, the Harvard style does not display journal article title, or issue number. Additionally the supplied Harvard style is not configured for a wide range of reference types. University of Queensland Library staff have created an amended version of the Harvard style.

Download the amended UQ Harvard style from: http://www.library.uq.edu.au/faqs/endnote/styles.html UQ have produced a number of versions. Ensure that you download the appropriate one for your version of EndNote.
