Upgrading EndNote
Printable guide: EndNote X.02
Existing users - issues to consider before upgrading
- There are backward compatibility issues with different versions of EndNote.
- It is not possible to work with both EndNote X.02 and an older version, e.g. versions up to EndNote 7, due to software design.
- Students and staff who plan on using EndNote in different locations in 2007, e.g. at home and at university should determine which version is installed on the computers they will use. Whilst it is expected that most student labs will upgrade to EndNote X.02 in 2007, there may be some computer labs on campus that will run older versions.
- For those currently using EndNote 7 (or earlier), read the list of new features added to EndNote X.02 below. If these new features will be useful to you, you should consider upgrading.
- Upgrading to EndNote X.02 is not difficult, but if you later decide that you wish to revert to EndNote 7 (or any earlier version), you will encounter considerable difficulties.
- Once you have converted your data to EndNote X you cannot easily go back to previous versions of EndNote.
- Do not run two versions of the software (e.g. versions 7 & X.02) on the same computer.
- If you write papers in collaboration with other researchers, it is advised that you do not upgrade to EndNote X unless all your collaborators are also upgrading. Staff and students engaging in group work or collaborative writing must ensure that all members are using the same version of EndNote. ( e.g. If a document which has been formatted with EndNote X or 9 is formatted with an earlier version of the software, all references will be deleted.)
- If you are currently using version 8, then it would be advisable to upgrade to version X.02
Compatibility, system requirements, word processors & EndNote X.02
Because of software design, the major issue with EndNote X.02 is that it is not backwardly compatible with EndNote 7 and earlier versions.
- Windows: EndNote X.02 will run on Windows 2000 (service pack 3) and XP. A Pentium 450-megahertz (MHz) or faster processor is required and for word processing EndNote X.02 is compatible with Word 2000, Word XP and Word 2003.
- Mac: EndNote X.02 will run on Mac OS X (10.3.9 - 10.4.x) and PowerPC or Intel Macintosh 450 MHz or higher and for word processing is compatible with Word X (10.1.2-10.1.6) and Word 2004.
- EndNote X.02 is completely compatible with EndNote 8 & 9. Documents and libraries created with EndNote 8 & 9 can be used with EndNote X.02 without conversion.
- EndNote X.02 files are compatible across Windows and Macintosh platforms.
- EndNote X.02 files are compatible with the new EndNote Web - which can be accessed via Web of Knowledge databases (ISI Web of Science, ISI Medline, ISI Biosis Prviews, ISI Inspec.)
- Libraries created in EndNote 7 (or earlier versions) will be converted into EndNote X format when they are first opened. Documents formatted with EndNote 7 (or earlier versions) should preferably be unformatted before use with EndNote X.02. However only unformat a document if it is connected to one EndNote library.
- In some installations the add-ins for the EndNote toolbar fail to load automatically into Word's StartUp folder. After installing EndNote an Endnote toolbar should appear in MS Word. The fix requires the copying of two files from Endnote into the Word Start-up folder. Refer to the following instructions:
Before upgrading...
- Make sure that you have back up copies of your EndNote libraries and any output styles, filters or connection files that you have written, edited or obtained from elsewhere.
- It is highly recommended (but not essential) that you unformat any copies of documents that you plan to do further work with after you upgrade to EndNote X. Only unformat a document if it is connected to one EndNote library.
- To unformat a document, open it in Word, and click on the Unformat Citations button on the EndNote toolbar or menu. The references in your document will change from their formatted form, e.g. (Smith, 1998) to their unformatted form, e.g. {Smith, 1998 #77}. Save these changes.
- It is recommended (but not essential) that you uninstall the earlier version of EndNote before installing EndNote 9.
- To uninstall in Windows, click on the Start menu, select Control Panel and click on the Add or Remove Programs icon. Highlight EndNote and click on the button to remove it.
Upgrading EndNote: Windows tips
- Back-up any styles, import filters, connection files and libraries that you do not want overwritten before running setup. (Store them somewhere other than the EndNote program directory on your computer.)
- From the start button select: Settings - Control Panel - Add & Remove programs – find EndNote in your list of programs and follow prompts to remove it.
- To ensure that any traces of EndNote are removed, delete the EndNote folder from program files – This is located on the C drive
- Double check – navigate to the MS Word StartUp folder and delete any EndNote files which look like: en7cwyw.dot and en7cwyw.wll
- Open MS Word – You will notice that the EndNote toolbar no longer exists and under Tools - Templates and Add-ins, the en7cwyw.dot and en7cwyw.WORDXP.wll are not listed
- You are now ready to install a new version of EndNote
- After installing EndNote open MS Word to check that an EndNote toolbar has been installed. In some installations the add-ins for the EndNote toolbar fail to load automatically into Word's Start-up folder. The fix requires the copying of two files from Endnote into the Word Start-up folder. Refer to the following instructions:
*Note: File path could be C:\documents and settings\username e.g. sabinar\application data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
Upgrading EndNote: Mac tips
Installing EndNote X on a computer that already has an earlier version of EndNote installed does not change what is in your old EndNote folder. The EndNote X Installer creates a new folder called “EndNote X” and installs the updated EndNote X files in that folder.
After installing EndNote 7, you will have two folders, with each containing an EndNote program. Copy your libraries from your old EndNote folder to your new EndNote X folder. If you have any customized styles, filters, or connection files, you should also copy them to the Styles, Filters, or Connections folders in the EndNote X folder. EndNote X includes a full collection of updated files, so unless you have specially customized a file for your needs, there is no reason to copy the old files.
Once you have removed your customized files and libraries from the old EndNote folder, and EndNote X is up and running, you can drag the remaining items in the old EndNote folder to the Trash. Be careful not to delete any libraries, papers, or other items that you need.
After installing EndNote open MS Word to check that an EndNote toolbar has been installed. In some installations the add-ins for the EndNote toolbar fail to load automatically into Word's Start-up folder. The fix requires the copying of two files from Endnote into the Word Start-up folder.
