Citation Databases

Why use a citation database?

Two critical databases for research students:

* Web of Science is an extensive abstract and citation database for the Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences. For more information see the online help within the Web of Science database (access via SuperSearch) or view the Web of Science Tutorial produced by Thomson ISI. Access via SuperSearch

* Scopus is an extensive abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources. covering scientific, medical, technical and social science research. Access via SuperSearch

ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR)

JCR is a tool that examines the impact factor of a journal using citation data from over 9,000 journals, and published meeting proceedings from more than 3,300 publishers in 60 countries. The University subscription covers the Scienc and Social Sciences editions.

JCR uses quantitative citation data to rank and compare journals. JCR enables users to sort journal data by clearly defined fields: Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Total Cites, Total Articles, Cited Half-Life, or Journal Title.  JCR enables users to sort subject category data by clearly defined fields: Total Cites, Median Impact Factor, Aggregate Impact Factor, Aggregate Immediacy Index, Aggregated Cited Half-Life, Number of Journals in Category, or Number of Articles in Category. Access via Supersearch

Use JCR to identify journals relevant to your research, identify journals in which to publish, and confirm the status of journals in which you have published.

A online tutorial for JCR may be accessed at: http://www.brainshark.com/brainshark/vu/view.asp?pi=143482
