Relais User Guide
What is Relais?
Relais is an online interlibrary loan & document delivery requesting service to request the loan of books, copies of journal articles, chapters from books, papers from conferences or proceedings, microforms and media items that are not currently available in the University of Melbourne library.
Relais allows you to:
- Request the items you need
- Receive copies to be delivered to your University of Melbourne email address where possible
- Record and monitor your requests online.

Signing In
You can access Relais here: http://cat.lib.unimelb.edu.au/screens/ill.html
Login using you full name and your library barcode
Select a function
- Request a book: Use this form if you would like to obtain a loan of a book, microform, media item, or music from another institution.
- Request an article/chapter: Use this form if you would like an article from another institution or a copy of a book chapter
- List Open Requests: Select this to view your requests that have not yet been filled
- List All Requests: Select this to view your past and current requests. You can check on an item by clicking on its request number
- Query Requests: Select this to check the progress of your requests. This option allows you to search your requests by title or keyword.
How to Make a Request
Submitting a book, media, microform or music request
Enter your login details and select book request from the login screen. The following screen will appear, enter as much information on the request page as possible.
- Title of Publication: Please enter the title of the book, media item, microform or music in full
- Publication details: Please enter as much information as possible to help us locate the item you need
- ISBN: Please provide an ISBN if known
- Notes: Please enter any additional information you feel will help us to locate the item required
- Messaging Address: This is your University email address, you will be sent a notification when your item arrive
- Copyright notice: Be sure to read and tick the box next to the copyright statement and then click submit.
Submitting an article or chapter request
Enter your login details and select request an article/ chapter from the login screen. The following screen will appear, enter as much information on the request page as possible.
- Title of publication: Please enter the title of the Journal in full, do not use abbreviations
- Title of Article: Please enter the article title
- Author of Article: Please enter the author(s) of the article
- Volume/Issue, Date and Pages: Please enter as much information in these fields as possible
- ISSN: Please provide an ISSN if known
- Delivery Method: Leave this as e-mail and the copy will be delivered to you University of Melbourne email address when it arrives
- Copyright notice: Be sure to read and tick the box next to the copyright statement and then click submit.
Monitor Your Requests
You have three options to look up the status of your requests
- Query Requests: Use this option if you want to search for a specific request number
- List Open Requests: This option allows you to view all requests that are currently in process and not yet complete
- List All Requests: Allows you to view all requests you have submitted
What does the status column mean?
The status column lets you know the progress of your requests, below are the most common status and their definitions:
- Entered - You have successfully entered your request. Interlibrary loans staff will now process your request
- Processed - Action has been taken by staff, such as placed your request with a supplier
- Delivered - Your request has been delivered or is available for pick up at the Baillieu Library
Receiving and Viewing Your Requests
- You will be notified by email when your loan or document arrives.
- If it is a book, or some other physical item, you will need to collect it from the High Use Collection, Ground floor, Baillieu Library. Your book will be available for collection for 7 days from recipt of the notification
- Please see staff at the service desk for access to Library Use Only items.
- Items that must be read under supervision are available in the Cultural Collections Reading Room, 3rd floor, Baillieu Library.
- If an electronic copy has been sent, you will receive it in PDF format attached to an email
Faulty Documents
- If there are any problems with the quality of the copy, or missing pages, please send an email alert with all relevant details to ill-library@unimelb.edu.au or phone 03 8344 5388 during business hours.
- Allow 24 hours for a response to your email.
- Do this as soon as possible because there is a limited time period to re-request faulty documents.
