CAVAL borrowers (within Victoria)

Registering to borrow and who can borrow

This includes staff and students borrowing under the CAVAL program from Victorian universities, and most TAFE institutions. Consult the CAVAL home site for a list of all participating institutions.

Intending borrowers need to bring their home ID card (student or staff), along with an authorised CAVAL card (issued by their home library), to the library to enable registration. Note that registering can take several minutes, and should be done as soon as one visits the library. Once registered all the branch libraries of the University of Melbourne can be used.

What can be borrowed?

10 items can be borrowed concurrently.

28 Day loans are the standard borrowing period for most items in the library.

Material in high demand is reserved for Melbourne University Students. This includes reserve material, and any items that have a restricted borrowing period of 7 Days (non-renewable), or Overnight. Reserve material can be identified by either "reserve" or "R" in the location code. 7 Day and Overnight loans are identified by a corresponding stamp in the barcode end of the item. Journals, or media items also cannot be borrowed.

Privileges can vary for branch libraries.

Fines for late returns

As soon as an item becomes overdue, borrowing privileges are suspended. Information regarding incurred charges are sent to the borrower and to their home library, which leads to suspension of borrowing rights until the fine is paid. How to pay a fine, see fines and penalties.

national borrowing schemes (interstate borrowers)

University Libraries Australia is a national borrowing scheme that allows all staff and students of AVCC member universities to borrow in person from any other interstate university in Australia. Students will be asked to present a photo ID card as well as proof of current enrolment. This could be your enrolment advice form or other proof from your university. Staff members will be asked to present a photo ID card and proof of current employment with a university participating in the scheme, these items are sufficient to allow staff at the Loans Desk to issue an Approved Borrowers card.

What can be borrowed?

This card will enable the user to borrow 10 items at any one time. Only the 28 day standard borrowing is available; restricted items (reserve, overnight, or 7 day non-renewable), journals and media items, cannot be borrowed.

Fines for late returns

Penalties and fines for late return of material are set out in the "Guide to Library fines and penalities" brochure available at the library. The library may also send details of overdue material or monies to your university library, which may also impose penalties. How to pay a fine, see fines and penalties.
