Requesting a book that is either out on loan, or available at another campus
Requesting a book that is on loan or unavailable
If you require an item that has either a 7, 28 or 90 day loan period, that is already out on loan (i.e. the status has a due date), or is otherwise unavailable (on display, in repair, or being relabelled), then you can place a request on it in the catalogue. This includes items from other campuses. When the item is returned it is put on the holdshelf at the location you select (for items from another campus) or at the owning library (for items at your campus).
If more than one person requests the item
a virtual queue forms and the borrowing period reduces to one week until the last person in the queue. If you request a 90 day loan then the borrowing period may be reduced so you can have use of it before the due date shown in the catalogue.
Requesting a book that is available at another campus
If you need a book that is located at another campus that is showing as available in the catalogue then you can request the item if it is a 7, 28 or 90 day loan and it will delivered to the library that you select.
You can't request items from the Parkville Campus to be delivered elsewhere on the campus.
How to request an item in the catalogue
If the item required has a status with a due date (i.e. is on loan) then select the "Request" button to place a hold on that item. Note that you will be required to type in your name, barcode number. Then press the "Submit above information" button, follow this by pressing the "Request selected item" button.
Holds may also be placed at the Loans Desk of the Library. Holds can be cancelled on request at the loans desk, or by logging into you patron record in the catalogue.
Collecting your requested items
Notification that your request is ready to collect
We email your university email address when your requested item is ready to collect. We keep your item on the hold
shelf for a maximum of one week for a 28 day loan, or three days for a 7 day loan. You can also see if a request is ready to collect by logging into your patron record in the catalogue. You can also call 13MELB.

Some of our bigger libraries have requested items stored on a hold shelf in their Reserve/High Use collection where they are filed in alpabetical order under the first three letters of your surname. You then need to use the self service machine to borrow the item.
Although in many of our libraries you will need to come to the service desk. Please refer to the below table to check where to collect your requested item.
