Holds
If an item one requires is on loan (i.e. the status has a due date), or otherwise unavailable (on display, in repair, or being relabelled), then one can request the item by placing a hold on it. If more than one person requires the item, a hold queue forms, and the borowing period reduces to one week.
Who can
This service is available to all registered users of the library.
How
Place holds via the library catalogue. If the item required has a status with a due date (i.e. is on loan) then select the "Request" button to place a hold on that item. Note that you will be required to type in your name, borrower's barcode number and a not required after date to validate the hold. Then press the "Submit above information" button, follow this by pressing the "Request selected item" button. Holds may also be placed at the Loans Desk of the Library.
Exceptions
The person must have a clear record i.e. no fees or fines owing, and no overdue
material.
Holds can only be placed on normal 28 day loans and 7 day loans (except 7 day loans from the Biomedical and Music Libraries).
Items with borrowing periods of less than 7 days are NOT holdable, ie. 2 Hour and
Overnight loans.
If more than one person has a hold on a 28 day item, then the item will be issued only for a week.
For all other items (ie. media) check with the library or collection concerned.
Info required
User card, and sufficient information to identify the item (call number, title, and edition if appropriate).
Options
- Specify date last needed (the hold is cancelled if item is not returned
by the specified date).
- Request an item. When you request an item a recall notice will be sent
to the borrower of the item but the due date will not change. If you require
the item urgently you will need to go to a loans desk and request a staff
member to recall the item by altering the due date.
- Holds can be cancelled on request at the loans desk, or by using the library catalogues' "View your Record" option.
Notification
Hold notice will be emailed to the requester. The item will be kept on the Hold Shelf for a maximum of one week for a 28 day loan or three days for a 7 day loan pending pick-up. Information on setting up or altering your E-mail notification of holds and overdues can be found at e-mail notification. Notification will also occur in the patron record, accessible via internet. It is also possible to contact the library by phone 8344 0444.
Note
Items which have an "available" status on the library catalogue, but can't be found, cannot be placed on hold. Inquire at the Loans Desk for a search to be instigated.
