Access to Library electronic resources

Access to the Library electronic resources are provided through the SuperSearch interface.

In our Libraries

  • most computers require login with a University of Melbourne central email username/password. Access to electronic resources is available on these computers, along with access to the internet. SuperSearch access on these computers requires further authentication with the same central email username/password. (Tell me more about usernames)
  • if you don't have a University of Melbourne central email username/password every library has at least one computer that does not require this type of authentication to access SuperSearch electronic resources.

Outside the libraries

  • Access to electronic databases outside libraries is limited through authentication requiring a current University of Melbourne email username/password. (Tell me more about usernames)
  • If you don't have this username you can still access free resources available via SuperSearch, such as the Library catalogue. Free resources are those which do not have a lock against them when displayed.

So tell me more about central University of Melbourne usernames
(See below for University of Melbourne staff and students, honorary appointments, librarians, research assistants and students without a current student card) ...

  • From 11th December 2006 the user name and password required for authentication through SuperSearch are your central University email username and password. You do not need to move to the central University of Melbourne email system, you just need to activate your account so that you have the username/password for SuperSearch access.
  • University of Melbourne staff and students (including honorary and casual staff) without a user name can create an account at http://accounts.unimelb.edu.au/
Staff can get help with this process from the Themis Help Desk.
Students can get help from Student IT.
If you have not established your honorary staff member status request Faculty authorisation through the HR4 form.
If access of less than 6 weeks only is required the process can be expedited through the Short Term Access Application Form
  • Research assistants of University of Melbourne academic staff (including honorary appointments) can apply for access to electronic resources on behalf of their academic, as a University Visitor (non-academic) through the relevant Faculty using the HR4 form.
  • College/Hospital librarians teaching University of Melbourne students or staff can request authorisation from INformation Services by completing the HR4 form and faxing to Library Authentication fax. 9347 0974

If you are having problems with access please visit our Frequently Asked Questions for the SuperSearch gateway.
