Access to Library electronic resources

Access to the Library electronic resources are provided through the Discovery interface.

In our Libraries

  • most computers require login with a University of Melbourne central email username/password. Access to electronic resources is available on these computers, along with access to the internet. Discovery access on these computers requires further authentication with the same central email username/password. (Tell me more about usernames)
  • if you don't have a University of Melbourne central email username/password every library has at least one computer designated as a "non login pc" that does not require this type of authentication to access University of Melbourne Library electronic resources.

Outside the libraries

  • Access to electronic databases outside libraries is limited through authentication requiring a current University of Melbourne email username/password. (Tell me more about usernames)
  • If you don't have this username you can still access free resources available via Discovery, such as the Library catalogue.
  • If you are a University of Melbourne alumna or alumnus, you can pay A$45.00 for a year’s access to selected databases and journals; refer to our Alumni services page for more information.

(See below for University of Melbourne staff and students, honorary appointments, librarians, research assistants and students without a current student card) ...

  • the user name and password required for authentication through Discovery are your central University email username and password. You do not need to move to the central University of Melbourne email system, you just need to activate your account so that you have the username/password for Discovery access.
  • University of Melbourne staff and students (including honorary and casual staff) without a user name can create an account at http://accounts.unimelb.edu.au/
Staff can get help with this process from the Themis Help Desk.
Students can get help from Student IT.
If you have not established your honorary staff member status request Faculty authorisation through the HR4 form.
** please note that the Short Term Access application process is no longer available.
  • Students without a current student card would need to apply through their Faculty as all student authentication is now validated against ISIS.
Please note - Students on leave of absence and students awaiting thesis completion still have access to online library electronic resources.
  • Research assistants of University of Melbourne academic staff (including honorary appointments) can apply for access to electronic resources on behalf of their academic, as a University Visitor (non-academic) through the relevant Faculty using the HR4 form.
  • College/Hospital librarians teaching University of Melbourne students or staff can request authorisation from University Library by completing the HR4 form and faxing to Library Authentication fax 8344 0197.
