Search strategy for reading lists

GIVEN: author and title (from a reading list item)...
FIND: the item record to which it refers.

1: Author search

Search by Author - the author is always the first part of a citation.

Marilyn Poole, 'Gender' in Ray Jureidini and Marilyn Poole (eds), Sociology. Australian Connections, 2nd edn, ch.10, pp.170-189
  1. Search for author Poole, Marilyn
  2. Select appropriate item
  3. Note Location, Call No, and Status

The "author search" for Poole, Marilyn was successful because she was the (co) editor. The catalogue regards the editor of a publication as the author of the work. An "author search" for Jureidini, Ray would have given the same result.

If this does not find the item...

2: Title search

Search by Title - a title is always the next part of a citation

M Galens, Australian Feminism: A Companion, 1998
  1. Search for author Galens, M: author NOT found
  2. Search for title Australian Feminism: A Companion: title found
  3. Note Location, Call No, and Status

The "author search" for Galens, M was unsuccessful - the name did not appear on the catalogue. Some parts of a catalogue record may be unreliable, but a full citation contains enough information to identify any item held by the library.

If this does not find the item...

3a: Author(2) Search

Search by Author - use the next named author (OR if no other author is cited...)

Margaret Lynn, 'Male Dominance', pp. 337-342 in Christine Stafford and Brian Furze (eds), Society and Change, 2nd edn, 1997
  1. Search for author Lynn, Margaret: author found, but NOT for this title
  2. Search for title Male Dominance: title found but NOT by this author
  3. Search for author Stafford, Christine: author found
  4. Select appropriate item (1997 edition)
  5. Note Location, Call No, and Status

The "author search" for Stafford, Christine was successful because she was the (co) editor. (The catalogue regards the editor of a publication as the author of the work.) An "author search" for Furze, Brian would have given the same result.

3b: Title(2) search

Search by Title - use the next listed title

Ken Dempsey, 'Economic Inequality between Men and Women in an Australian Rural Community', Australian New Zealand Journal of Sociology, vol 23, no.3, November 1987, pp.358-74
  1. Search for author Dempsey, Ken : author found, but NOT associated with this article.
  2. Search for title Economic Inequality between Men and Women in an Australian Rural Community: title NOT found
  3. Search for title Australian New Zealand Journal of Sociology
Follow prompt Search as Words: title found
  4. Select appropriate item (vol 23)
  5. Note Location, Call No, and Status

Library users who can read a citation would recognise this as a citation of a journal article - they would search for the title of the journal: Australian New Zealand Journal of Sociology, ignoring steps 1 and 2.
