General (Book) Collection

LOAN COLLECTION

The General Collection takes up most of this level - books being shelved according to Dewey subject classification.
There are signs and plans indicating where particular (Dewey) sequences are kept.
The collection preface "A" denotes Australian literature.

This collection is very well used - always look in the
Sorting OR
Holding OR
Overflow shelves,
(if you don't find a book in its "usual" place).

Large size books, have the preface f , ef or gf in their call number.
They are shelved after the other books - eg f835 is shelved after the sequence 800-899

Catalogues are also sited on this floor.

Print the floorplan for the location of all shelving sequences.

Discussion rooms

The discussion rooms are a study area where the usual "Quiet Study" does not apply. However, it is NOT a "noisy study" area! Always be aware of other library users studying here.

You can book a discussion room via the Loans Desk on the Ground Floor.

Library Catalogue

Online Catalogues are situated throughout the library (and via the www at http://cat.lib.unimelb.edu.au ). You can also use the catalogue to check your loans and place holds on library items. See the information on Borrowing

Learn how to use the catalogue for effective searching and keeping track of your borrowing - just book a class OR ask at a library Information Desk

Details of some older Library items can be found in the card catalogue on the Ground Floor of the Library - these records are being made available to the online catalogue as part of an ongoing project.
