Reference Collection

This is the starting point for library research...
...finding key search words about your topic which can then be used to search the library catalogue for books and other items.

The Reference collection includes

  • subject encyclopaedias,
  • dictionaries,
  • handbooks,
  • biographies,
  • ABS materials

The reference works are shelved according to the Dewey Subject Classification system -
eg most "History" references are in the same area of shelves (this doesn't apply to bibliographies though, they are shelved at the Dewey classification number for "Bibliographies": between 010 and 019 ).

Browse the shelves to find useful reference in your subject area and take notes - you need this information to find suitable search terms
