Periodicals Collection

NOT FOR LOAN TO UNDERGRADUATES (identified by a "P" in the call number)
Periodicals are publications that are published at regular intervals; these are mainly ACADEMIC publications though you may have heard of "Scientific American" or "Nature"
Periodicals are also called Serials or Journals

They contain articles, academic papers, which represent the very latest in published research - this is why they are of great use.
(Many books refer to journal articles in their bibliography).

Baillieu periodicals are divided between

  • bound journals (older issues bound together) and
  • unbound journals (recent issues shelved as single copies)

Browse the respective shelves for these.

If you cannot find the periodical where you would expect it to be,
Go to the Holding or Sorting shelves; this is where periodicals, having been used, are awaiting return to their normal place on the shelves.

Microforms

NOT FOR LOAN (identified by a "Mic/" in the call number)
Microforms are not books, nor periodicals, nor even printed on paper. Microforms are film based. They are either

  • Microfilm - similar to a roll of photographic film with each "frame" containing a high quality image OR
  • Microfiche - a "sheet" of film containing multiple images, perhaps many pages from old newspapers.

Special Readers are required to look at them.
Printed guides include instructions on operating the Readers.
There are printers with the Readers - with a photocopy card you can print what appears on the reader's screen.

The main subject areas in the Microform collection tend to be historical in nature, eg

  • History,
  • Women's Studies
  • Fine Arts.
  • (& major newspapers)
